A Lakeside Park man accused of killing his schoolteacher wife surrendered to Chicago police after an armed standoff late Thursday.
Sgt. Dennis Walsh of Chicago police said Dennis R. Greene Sr., 31, a native of Chicago, was taken into custody by members of the SWAT team about 10:50 p.m. and taken to the city's Central Detention Lockup.
Greene was wanted on a murder charge in the Monday death of Holmes Junior High teacher Tara Greene in Lakeside Park.
Police said Greene had been barricaded in a 16-unit building at 78th and Bishop streets on Chicago's South Side for about seven hours before giving up, and at one point had taken a hostage.
Police said Greene told them he wouldn't come out of the building, and was armed. He had taken a female hostage, but released her.
The standoff began as police tried to arrest Greene after a day of surveillance.
Tara Greene's family was aware throughout the day that police knew where Mr. Greene was.
"Tara's funeral is Saturday," said Gary Griesser, business manager at First Church of Christ in Burlington and family spokesman.
"It will be a relief that Mr. Greene (will be in) custody so everyone can quit worrying that he might show up."
Griesser is a family friend of Tara Greene's parents, Robert and Karen Barrett of Florence.
Tara Greene's body was found Monday in the couple's Derby Ridge apartment in Lakeside Park.
Meanwhile, her students are making plans to raise money for her 7-year-old son, Chi'an.
Holmes Junior High is staging the play School House Rock to benefit the youngster.
Tara Greene taught math to eighth- and ninth-graders at the Covington school.
The play is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday in the Holmes Auditorium. A donation is requested.
A trust fund has also been established for Chi'an. Donations for the Chi'an Greene Trust Fund can be mailed c/o Heritage Bank, 1911 Dixie Highway, Fort Wright, KY 41011. Donations can also be dropped off at any Heritage Bank branch.
