Others tap into Isleys' music

By Larry Nager
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Just as the Isleys have enlisted the talents of younger musicians from Jimi Hendrix to R. Kelly, younger musicians have often tapped the Isleys to spice up their music.

In the early days, it was cover versions, as when the Beatles recorded the Isley hit "Twist and Shout" (which the Mavericks covered just last Thursday at Southgate House). In 1990, Rod Stewart called on Ronald for a duet on the Isley's Motown hit, "This Old Heart of Mine."

In the age of sampling, modern acts have electronically cut and pasted pieces of the Isley catalog into their records. The results have often been huge hits and, like everything else about the amazing Isley Brothers, there's no end in sight. "I've got about five requests for samples right now, from 50 Cent, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg," says Ronald Isley.

Here are some Isley songs and the Who's Who of R&B and hip-hop that has sampled them.

"Between the Sheets" - Whitney Houston ("One of Those Days"), Notorious B.I.G. ("Big Poppa"), Aaliyah ("Old School"), Tribe Called Quest ("Bonita Applebaum"), Common ("Breaker 1/9"), Da Brat ("Funkdafied"), Des'ree ("You Gotta Be"), Jerzee Monet ("Most High"), Keith Murray ("The Most Beautifullest Thing in the World"), Naughty by Nature ("Written on Ya Kitten"), Skee-Lo ("Superman")

"Fight the Power" - Public Enemy ("Fight the Power"), Cypress Hill ("Phuncky Feel One")

"Let's Fall in Love" - 2pac ("Better Dayz"), Bone Thugs-N-Harmony ("Shoot 'Em Up")

"Footsteps in the Dark" - Ice Cube ("It Was a Nice Day"), Redman, "What U Lookin' 4"), Usher ("You Should Be Mine")

"Make Me Say it Again, Girl" - Bone Thugs-N-Harmony ("Tha Crossroads"), Coolio ("For My Sistas"), Naughty by Nature ("Hip Hop Hooray")

"That Lady" - Beastie Boys ("A Year and a Day")

"Hello, It's Me" - Queen Latifah ("Black Hand Side")

"Here We Go Again" - Will Smith ("Yes Yes Y'All"), Brand Nubian ("Here We Go")
