Witness: Inmate captured guard

The Associated Press

A man being tried for the second time in the slaying of a guard during a prison riot 10 years ago was among inmates who broke down a door and took the guard prisoner, a former inmate testified Monday.

Steve Macko testified in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court that he saw James Were and other inmates break down the door to the restroom where officer Robert Vallandingham had barricaded himself at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility.

Macko said inmates handcuffed the guard, took him into a corridor and then to a cell around the corner.
