An argument apparently led to a shooting just after midnight on Fountain Square.
Police said the victim was hit in the torso while on the square, and apparently walked into the underground garage, where they found him. He was taken to University Hospital, where he was undergoing surgery at press time.
Five cones marked evidence on top of the square, at least some of which was bullet casings. Homicide Sgt. Lisa Thomas would not say how many of the cones marked shell casings.
More than 40 witnesses saw the incident, and police requested a Metro bus to transport them to police headquarters.
"This is one of the bigger crime scenes we've had in a public place," Sgt. Thomas said. "It's just an enormous amount of work to interview that many people and put their stories together."
According to radio dispatches, police were looking for two men who fled the scene in a light brown Humvee. Police handcuffed one black male at the scene and led him into the back of a police cruiser.
