Lumpkins sets riding record at Turfway
The Enquirer and wire reports
Jason Lumpkins broke Kris Prather's 2001 riding record of 109 wins during a Turfway Park winter-spring meeting Monday when he rode his 110th victory aboard Sir Grunt in the fourth race.
Lumpkins, who was riding his first full meet at Turfway after moving his tack from Northern California, has won seven stakes races, won five races on a card six times, and reached his 2,000th career victory milestone.
He was the regular rider of Lloyd Madison Farm's Champali, who won the WEBN Stakes and John Battaglia Memorial Stakes before finishing third in the Lane's End Stakes (Grade II), as well as Sam Pollock's Seven Four Seven, who won three straight stakes - Likely Exchange, Wintergreen and Fairway Fun.
"I'm excited to have broken the record," Lumpkins said. "It's been great. I knew coming into the meet I was close to my 2,000th victory, and I was glad to get that here. I'd like to thank (trainers) Bernie Flint and Greg Foley for giving me the opportunity to ride their good horses."
Through Monday, Lumpkins was 73 wins in front of Rafael Bejarano, who is second in the Turfway standings, and was ranked second in the nation for wins behind Russell Baze.
Turfway's winter-spring meet concludes Thursday. First post will be 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.
