Health educator says look good, feel good

By Joy Kraft

Though Mary Rogers of Florence concentrates on keeping all people on the latest path to health as a Humana manager of health education, she and husband Mark have a warm spot for special-needs kids.

"Special Olympics is so unique and needed by these wonderful kids," says the 38-year-old mother of one son, Rex, 6.

Even while focusing on others, "Mary takes great care of herself and makes sure she looks good even if she is going to the grocery store," says her husband in his nominating letter. "To this day, I can still say `Wow!' "

Describe your style: I don't have a specific look. ... I can go from bell-bottoms to business casual to AnnTaylor.

Best bargain: I got the coolest Banana Republic long, tailored, light-blue trench jacket at the Gap outlet for $4.99. It was $168.

Most sentimental clothing: Jewelry that I got from my parents when I was probably 13. ... I'd always wanted a diamond, and they bought me this tiny, tiny diamond necklace. But it was so big to me.

You can never have enough: Shoes. I just read a study saying the majority of women have 25-35 pairs. I'm probably in that range.

Earliest fashion memory: I got to go to the downtown Shillito's for beauty school etiquette class when I was about 9. They taught you about manners and clothing and let us try on makeup.

If you had big bucks you'd buy: Really classy suits, designer jeans and purses and bags to match . . . and funky hats.

Fashion philosophy: If you feel good in it and it makes you feel good, you should buy it because there's nothing better than looking good and feeling good about yourself.
