Review of Kentucky's title seasons

Here's a recap of Kentucky's seven national championship seasons:

1948: Adolph Rupp's "Fabulous Five," led by stars Ralph Beard, Alex Groza and Wallace "Wah Wah" Jones, went 34-2. The same players then led their country to an Olympic title. NCAA final: UK 58, Baylor 42.

1949: UK (32-2) repeated, allowing just nine field goals in the title game. Final:

UK 46, Oklahoma State 36.

1951: With only six healthy players plus ailing Cliff Hagan, who had a throat infection, UK (32-2) rallied from a 20-12 deficit in the title game. Final: UK 68, Kansas State 58.

1958: The "Fiddlin' Five" (23-6) often fiddled around with the lead, but Vernon Hatton's 30 points in the title game were enough to overcome a 25-point, 19-point showing by Seattle's Elgin Baylor. Final:

UK 84, Seattle 72.

1978: Joe B. Hall coached the Wildcats (30-2) to their fifth title, won dramatically by Jack "Goose" Givens' 41 points in the championship game. Final: UK 94, Duke 88.

1996: A roster loaded with future pros went 34-2 - avenging an early loss to Massachusetts in the semifinals and then delivering Rick Pitino a title-game victory.

Final: UK 76, Syracuse 67.

1998: First-year coach Tubby Smith installed a devastating defense, and the "Comeback Cats" (35-4) rallied late in their final three games. Final: UK 78, Utah 69.
