NKU seeks Elite Eight without top forward

The Northern Kentucky University women's basketball team plays Quincy in the NCAA Division II Tournament's Great Lakes Region championship at 7 p.m. today in Indianapolis.

But the fifth-seeded Norse will be playing without freshman standout Sharell Snardon.

Snardon, a 5-foot-11 forward, scored 14 points in NKU's 66-57 upset of No. 7 Indianapolis in the tournament semifinals Saturday. Indianapolis had been the region's top seed, and NKU snapped a 17-game winning streak.

An opponent pushed Snardon as she was attempting a breakaway layup in the game's final seconds, and her head smacked the floor as she fell. She lost her two front teeth.

An Indianapolis trainer called a dentist, and Snardon spent the next three hours being fitted for a make-shift retainer. Her teeth were re-inserted, but she won't be playing in the tournament today.

"The fans were elated (with Saturday's win) but we were trying to get her squared away. We did get to celebrate later," NKU coach Nancy Winstel said. "We certainly will miss her in the game."

NKU has played Quincy three times this season, winning Nov. 30 (51-46) and Feb. 8 (71-63). Quincy defeated NKU in the GLVC Tournament March 7, 66-54.

The Norse seek a fourth trip in five years to the NCAA Elite Eight, led by seniors Amy Mobley, Bridget Flanagan and Kristin Polosky. They played on NKU's 2000 Division II national championship team.

"When our seniors come to play, we're pretty good," Winstel said.
