ROSS TWP. - A stray bullet struck Dan Ulrich, 37, Friday afternoon as he sat in his home office in the 3100 block of New London Road, township police said.
A 911 call came from Ulrich's home at about 2:35 p.m. When police arrived, Ulrich was alert and conscious, with a bullet wound to the back of his head.
Ulrich apparently heard the bullet crash through a window and then realized he had been struck, Sgt. Carl Worley said.
He was taken to the township fire department and then taken by helicopter to University Hospital, where he was listed hours later in stable condition.
Worley said the shooting most likely was accidental.
Neighbors say that gun hobbyists often practice in the woods behind the house.
Police officers, aided by a helicopter, canvassed the woods but found no obvious signs of target practice.
The shot apparently had "quite an arc," which led Worley to think the shooter probably was some distance away.
Anyone with information is asked to call township police, 863-8284.
