Thumbs down: Prosecutor
Special prosecutor Pierce Cunningham undercut the credibility of a grand jury investigation by failing to disclose a $2,500 political contribution to Ohio Treasurer Joe Deters, one of the subjects of the investigation. The case involved a property room theft during Deters' tenure as Hamilton County prosecutor, and one issue was whether Deters or others on his staff covered up the crime. The grand jury on March 9 cleared Deters and his staff. Pete Marshall, a former prosecutor's investigator, was charged with the theft of $2,817.

Amber Alert: Controversy not smart
The nine-month drama over the kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart, which ended this week with the Utah teen's miraculous return, has helped heighten attention to child abduction and increase willingness to combat it.

Thumbs down: Rep. Grendell
The outrageous personal attack by State Rep. Tim Grendell, R-Chesterland, against State Sen. Mark Mallory, D-Cincinnati, merits a non-partisan condemnation in Columbus.
