LOUISVILLE - Democrat Bruce Lunsford began running campaign commercials Tuesday, becoming the first Kentucky candidate to take his gubernatorial bid to the television airwaves.
A multimillionaire health-care entrepreneur, Lunsford said he is counting on the TV blitz to help him get past primary opponents he calls "career politicians" - House Speaker Jody Richards and the Democratic front-runner, Attorney General Ben Chandler.
A Harlan demolition contractor, Otis Hensley, also is in the May 20 gubernatorial primary.
The Republicans also have four candidates in the GOP primary.
The ads portray Lunsford as an honest, independent leader who will "clean up the mess in Frankfort."
Lunsford, who is financing his own campaign, said he is spending more than $500,000 for his first week of television commercials. That will mean more than seven a day on one Louisville station.
