College students plan strike for peace today
College students in Greater Cincinnati are participating in the nationwide Student Strike for Books not Bombs today to show their opposition to war with Iraq.
University of Cincinnati and Miami University students have events planned. At Miami, students will hold a morning vigil, a rally and will host panel discussions and information workshops instead of attending classes.
At UC, students will gather noon-2 p.m. at Sigma Sigma Commons on campus to hear speakers and music and participate in drum circles.
The National Youth and Student Peace Coalition called on students across the United States to join in a one-day strike that will oppose military action against Iraq.
Death penalty charge filed in man's slaying
HAMILTON - A 53-year-old Hamilton man faces a possible death sentence after being indicted Tuesday on accusations that he killed an 85-year-old man while burglarizing his house and robbing him.
Donald J. Ketterer was indicted on five counts: aggravated murder, aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary, grand theft of a motor vehicle and an additional count of burglary.
Butler County assistant prosecutor Craig Hedric said Ketterer is accused of killing Lawrence B. Sanders on Feb. 24, then returning to the victim's Shuler Avenue home for a second burglary on Feb. 25.
Ketterer is also accused of stealing Sanders' car.
He is expected to be arraigned on the charges next week.
Police seek suspect who fled SWAT team
Cincinnati police are looking for a man they described as a major drug suspect who escaped them Saturday night in Walnut Hills by jumping out a window to avoid the SWAT team.
Officers charged Otis Boston, 27, with drug trafficking and possession, permitting drug abuse at his "Right Now Records" company on Gilbert Avenue, obstructing official business for running from officers and assault on a police officer because he landed on one when he dove out the second-story window. The officer's face was cut.
Police found almost 500 grams of powder cocaine, two guns and more than $7,800. They called the building "fortified," with two armed lookouts. They also seized a 1975 Chevrolet Caprice convertible.
Boston was sent to prison in 1997 for receiving stolen property and aggravated drug trafficking.
Investigators ask anyone with information about Boston to call Crime Stoppers at 352-3040.
Computer seller told to halt business
The state has obtained a temporary restraining order against an unregistered Cincinnati computer parts seller who state officials say has garnered more than 50 complaints from around the country for failing to fulfill online auction orders.
Ohio Attorney General Jim Petro requested the restraining order against four Cincinnati men who have been doing business under the names God's Toy Store and Crown Jewel Computers.
The order prevents the firm and its principals from engaging in online auctions. Petro also asks for reimbursement of payments made to the defendants - Gregory McGruder, Antonio Bonds (also known as Tony Banda), Marvin Jackson and Joseph Gordon - plus court costs and a civil penalty of $25,000 for each violation.
According to the complaint, the men failed to deliver $34,335 in goods to at least 53 consumers who filed official complaints. They allegedly used Internet auction sites to solicit sales of computers and peripherals, then misrepresented that customers would receive faster service if they agreed to pay via Western Union money transfers.
Two shot, wounded in hotel parking lot
A 28-year-old Silverton man was shot in the face, back and foot and a 19-year-old Bond Hill woman was shot in the arm in a Monday night attack at a motel on Reading Road near Interstate 75, police said.
Derrick Minor and Reonna Walker were standing by a vehicle in the parking lot of Carrousel Inn, 8001 Reading Road, about 8 p.m. when the assailant shot them, Hamilton County sheriff's deputies said.
Minor, who lives in the 7500 block of Montgomery Road, apparently ran from the scene and was found seriously injured in the parking lot of Auto Auction, 8200 Reading Road. He was in serious condition Tuesday at University Hospital, deputies said.
Walker, who lives in the 1900 block of Seymour Ave., also ran from the scene. She phoned a friend, who took her to Jewish Hospital, where she was treated and released.
