Brown Publishing Co. has agreed to buy 23 newspapers in Ohio, Kentucky and four other states.
Terms of the deal with Birmingham, Ala.-based Community Newspaper Holdings Inc. were not disclosed.
The newspapers include 11 dailies, 12 weeklies and related publications. They also are in West Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee.
"These newspapers have a long, successful history of serving their communities," said Roy Brown, president and chief executive of Brown Publishing.
The Ohio daily newspapers are the Portsmouth Daily Times, the Gallipolis Daily Tribune and the (Pomeroy-Middleport) Daily Sentinel. The two Kentucky daily newspapers are the Harlan Daily Enterprise and the Middlesboro Daily News.
The weekly newspapers include the Russellville News-Democrat and Leader, the Hazard Herald, the Prestonsburg Floyd County Times and the Leitchfield Grayson County News-Gazette in Kentucky.
Brown Publishing will operate 25 daily newspapers, 29 weekly newspapers and related publications in six states with a combined daily circulation of 190,000 and weekly distribution to more than 750,000 households.
