Stowers' FTs seal win for NKU

KENOSHA, Wis. - Brenden Stowers made two free throws with four seconds remaining Thursday night as Northern Kentucky University held off the University of Wisconsin-Parkside 66-64 at the DeSimone Gymnasium.

Stowers' two free throws gave NKU a 66-61 lead.

Wisconsin-Parkside's Quincey Moman hit a 3-pointer with one second left to cut the NKU advantage to 66-64, but the Norse ran out the clock on the inbound pass. NKU, ranked 13th nationally in the NCAA Division II poll, improved to 21-5 (15-4 Great Lakes Valley Conference).

Wisconsin-Parkside held a 61-60 lead with a minute remaining, but a driving layup by Mike Kelsey gave NKU a 62-61 advantage. Following a Parkside miss, Quentin Smith extended NKU's lead to 64-61 by rebounding Stowers' missed layup and scoring on a stickback.

NKU will close the regular season at 4 p.m. Saturday at 16th-ranked Lewis University.

Women

Wis.-Parkside 75, NKU 73

KENOSHA, Wis. - Sammy Kromm scored six of her game-high 34 points in overtime as Wisconsin-Parkside upset NKU.

Kromm's basket with 54 seconds remaining in overtime gave Wisconsin-Parkside a 75-70 lead, but NKU's Amy Mobley connected on a 3-pointer with 42 seconds left to cut the deficit to 75-73. NKU had a final chance to tie or win the game in the closing seconds, but Kristin Polosky missed a 3-point shot, and time expired.

No. 21 NKU dropped to 19-6 (14-5). Wisconsin-Parkside improved to 11-15 (7-12).

Mobley led NKU with 22 points, and Sharell Snardon added 18 points and 12 rebounds. Mobley also moved into 12th place on the NKU all-time scoring with 1,267 career points.

NKU made 47.4 percent of its shots from the field, but the Norse committed 23 turnovers. The Norse made nine of 24 3-point attempts and won the rebounding battle by a 42-32 margin.

NKU will play at Lewis University at 2 p.m. Saturday. NKU still can clinch the No. 2 seed in the upcoming GLVC Tournament with a victory Saturday.

Cincinnati State 82, Cuyahoga 33

The Surge outscored Cuyahoga 47-11 by halftime and kept rolling in the first round of the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference Tournament. Sophomore guard Brandi Hollingsworth led all scorers with 20 points.

Cincinnati State advances to today's 3 p.m. semifinals. The ORCC Championship game is at 2 p.m. Saturday.
