Isles hand Avalanche first loss in 15 games

Devils edge Bruins to grease the skids for fading Boston

The Associated Press

UNIONDALE, N.Y. - Dave Scatchard scored twice, and backchecking goalie Garth Snow made 25 saves as the surging New York Islanders handed the Colorado Avalanche their first regulation loss in 15 games with a 4-1 victory Friday.

The Avalanche were 11-0-2-1 in their previous 14 games and had scored the first goal in each, four shy of the NHL record, but the Islanders continued the fine play they showed on their recent road trip and snapped both streaks.

Scatchard scored 2:28 in for the Islanders, who played their first home game since Feb. 11. They returned to Nassau Coliseum following a productive 2-1-1 swing through the Western Conference.

Devils 3, Bruins 2

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Jeff Friesen scored on a 40-foot bad-angle shot that Boston goaltender Jeff Hackett missed with 6:27 to play as the Devils rallied to win.

John Madden scored a goal and set up Jiri Bicek's game-tying tally as the Devils snapped a three-game winless streak (0-2-1).

Joe Thornton scored twice for Boston, which is now 1-4-1 on a seven-game road trip that put its playoff chances in jeopardy with 21 games to play in the regular season.

Boston has slipped to the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with 64 points. Montreal is two points back, but the Bruins have two games in hand.

Hurricanes 2, Lightning 2

RALEIGH, N.C. - Jeff O'Neill scored his team-leading 24th goal midway through the third period as the Carolina Hurricanes spoiled Tampa Bay's bid for a share of the Southeast Division lead with a tie.

Vaclav Prospal scored twice for the Lightning.

Former Miami University teammates Kevyn Adams of Carolina and Dan Boyle of Tampa Bay each had an assist.

Kings 4, Sabres 1

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Bryan Smolinski and Ziggy Palffy each scored twice for Los Angeles.

Smolinski has seven goals and 11 points in his last 11 games. With his second goal, Smolinski equaled his total of 13 from last season. Palffy has 14 goals and 29 points in the last 23 games.

Stars 2, Coyotes 2

DALLAS - Jason Arnott broke Dallas' power-play drought with 6:27 remaining in regulation to lift the Stars into a tie.

Arnott snapped his team's 0-for-35 power-play slump, notching his 14th goal of the season.

The Coyotes are unbeaten in their last five games (4-0-1).

AHL: Ducks edge Admirals

Nick Smith and Rob Valicevic each recorded goals as the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks held on to defeat the Norfolk Admirals 2-1 Friday at Cincinnati Gardens.

Jean-Francois Damphousse turned aside 25 of the 26 shots he faced for the Ducks, who have won two straight on the heels of a six-game winless streak.

Mike Peluso scored for the Admirals, who had a nine-game road unbeaten streak stopped.

Craig Andersson made 20 saves in the loss for Norfolk, which suffered just its sixth regulation loss on the road this season (17-6-3-1).

The Ducks complete a two-game series with Norfolk at 7:35 p.m. today in the Gardens.
