Norse home win streak halted at 20
Jumper late in overtime stops No. 10 NKU
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Cris Brunson hit a 10-foot jumper with 2.1 seconds remaining in overtime Thursday, putting Southern Indiana ahead 87-85 and snapping Northern Kentucky's 20-game home winning streak.
The Norse (19-4, 13-3 Great Lakes Valley Conference) squandered a chance to end the game in regulation. Ahead 77-74 with 12.5 seconds remaining, NKU's Adam Howell missed a pair of free throws, leading to David Ragland's tying 3-pointer with .4 seconds remaining.
In overtime, after Mike Kelsey hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 85, Brunson's running jumper in the lane gave the Screaming Eagles (17-5, 11-4) the victory.
The Norse, ranked No. 10 in the latest Division II national poll, were 11-0 at Regents Hall this season and had not lost a game there since a 64-62 setback to Kentucky Wesleyan on Dec. 6, 2001. The streak was the second longest in Division II in the country.
Quentin Smith scored 21 points to lead the Norse, while teammate Brenden Stowers came off the bench to tally 19 points and eight assists.
Southern Indiana, which outrebounded the Norse 50-26, were led by Diond're Givens' 29 points and Billy Harris' 15 rebounds.
The loss was Northern Kentucky's third straight to the Screaming Eagles. The Norse are back in action Saturday at 3:15 p.m. when they host Kentucky Wesleyan.
