Florida gets unexpected boost
The Associated Press
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Finally, Christian Drejer had a game he could smile about. Next, he wants to make sure it wasn't a one-time deal. Injured through most of the season, the Danish superstar finally had a breakout game Wednesday, finishing with 11 points and five assists to help No. 4 Florida to a 74-55 win over Mississippi.
Drejer dominated the second half, making a 3-pointer and dishing out four pretty assists during a 23-3 run that helped the Gators (20-3, 9-1 Southeastern Conference) turn a two-point game into a blowout.
"People wondered if there would be chemistry problems when Christian finally got back," Florida coach Billy Donovan said. "But with the kind of player he is, he creates chemistry."
The 20-year-old freshman's big game came just four days after he asked Donovan to take him out of a game because the injured foot that has plagued him all season left him doubting his ability.
He's not sure he's over the hump yet, but at least there are signs of encouragement.
"It's been really tough," Drejer said. "You don't expect to go on the kind of adventure I've been on. But it has made me realize some things - like to be happy when you wake up, happy you can walk, happy you can play the game."
Florida reached the 20-win mark for the fifth straight season.
The Rebels (12-9, 3-7) lost their fifth straight, mainly because they were unable to solve a 2-3 Florida zone that shut down the middle and forced them to work the ball around the perimeter in the second half.
Drejer, the Danish League player of the year last season, played in just his eighth college game. He made his first two 3-pointers of the season, and had three rebounds and a steal to go with the assists.
Donovan says it will take time for Drejer to regain full confidence in the foot.
"He wants to know it's all the way back," Donovan said. "I think he goes through the struggle of feeling the pain and wondering if it's normal, or if there's something really wrong there."
