Arsenal, Real Sociedad tie

By Chris Lehourites
The Associated Press

Inter Milan took control of the Italian league, capitalizing on a loss by crosstown rival AC Milan.

Arsenal maintained its three-point lead in the English Premier League and Real Sociedad still leads in Spain despite being held to a scoreless tie with Espanyol.

Inter beat Reggina 3-0 on Sunday Christian Vieri's league-leading 18th goal and two goals by Mohamed Kallon. AC Milan, which had been sharing the lead with Inter for two weeks, lost 1-0 on a goal by Perugia's Fabrizio Miccoli.

Italy

Defending Italian champion Juventus, which beat Empoli 1-0 on a penalty kick from David Trezeguet, shares second place with AC Milan.

Lazio, which played to a 1-1 tie with last-place Torino in Rome, remained in fourth while Chievo played a scoreless tie at Brescia.

Inter leads with 45 points, followed by AC Milan and Juventus with 42. Lazio has 38 and Chievo 34.

England

Arsenal got another goal from Thierry Henry, but Laurent Robert tied it as Newcastle earned a 1-1 tie and jumped into third place.

Second-place Manchester United failed to make up ground, held to a 1-1 tie by Manchester City. Shaun Goater scored a late goal for City.

Newcastle moved ahead of Chelsea, which beat Birmingham 3-1. Everton, in fifth place, lost to Charlton 2-1 while Liverpool rallied for a 1-1 tie with Middlesbrough.

Arsenal has 57 points, followed by Manchester United with 54 and Newcastle with 49.

Spain

Real Sociedad has led in Spain since October, but its lead shrank to two points as Real Madrid crushed Real Betis 4-1 on goals from Zinedine Zidane, Raul Gonzalez, Luis Figo and Ronaldo.

Third-place Valencia tied 1-1 at last-place Recreativo de Huelva. Deportivo de La Coruna played to a 1-1 home tie with Osasuna. FC Barcelona's struggles continued with a 2-2 tie against Athletic Bilbao.

Sociedad has 44 points with Real Madrid next with 42. Valencia is third with 39, followed by Deportivo with 36. Barcelona has just 24, two above the relegation zone.

Germany

Bayern Munich gained a point on second-place Borussia Dortmund despite being held to a 1-1 tie by Hamburger SV after Naohiro Takahara netted an injury-time header. Stuttgart, which beat Dortmund 1-0, moved into third place.

Bayern leads the Bundesliga with 44 points. Dortmund and Stuttgart both have 36.

Netherlands

PSV Eindhoven stretched its lead over defending champion Ajax to four points. The Amsterdam team was held to 1-1 tie with Feyenoord.

PSV beat RKC Waalwijk 1-0 as Arjen Robben tapped in a goal for the league leaders. Robin van Persie scored the tying goal for Feyenoord.

PSV has 48 points, with Ajax next at 44 and Feyenoord at 37.

Scotland

Defending Scottish champion Celtic kept pace with the Rangers, but striker Henrik Larssonbroke his jaw. Celtic beat Livingston 2-1 while the Rangers topped Dunfermline 3-1.

The Rangers are in front with 72 points, followed by Celtic with 69.

Greece

Panathinaikos kept its grip on first after beating crosstown rival AEK Athens 2-1 while Olympiakos stayed second by downing Iraklis 2-1.

Marseille leads with 48 points, followed by Monaco with 46 and Nice and Auxerre with 43 each.

Portugal

FC Porto increased its lead after beating Guimaraes 2-1. Second-place Benfica opened a three-point advantage over Sporting after downing Leiria 3-0. Sporting was held to a 1-1 tie with Vazim.
