Top 25 roundup: Notre Dame wins 13th straight at home
By The Associated Press
Notre Dame has been unstoppable at home. Pittsburgh can't win a big game on the road. Both things stayed the same Sunday as the 10th-ranked Fighting Irish beat the fourth-ranked Panthers 66-64, their 13th straight win at home and another tough road loss for Pittsburgh.
"It's a very tough loss for us," Panthers coach Ben Howland said. "We're disappointed to have had the lead in our past two road games and let them slip away from us."
Chris Thomas found Torin Francis underneath with 0.6 seconds left for the winning basket for Notre Dame (19-4, 7-2 Big East), which leads the Panthers (16-3, 6-2) by one-half game in the conference's West Division.
Thomas started to drive around Brandin Knight to get a shot off, but saw a crowd of players. He spotted Francis under the basket and made the pass for his eighth assist.
"I cut to the ball and he found me at the last minute," said Francis, who was 3-for-3 from the field in the second half after being held without a shot in the first half. "I just put it up."
The Panthers had one last chance, but Jordan Cornette swatted away the inbounds pass by Jaron Brown as time expired and for the fourth straight game Pittsburgh had squandered a double-digit lead. The Panthers, who have lost at Georgia and Syracuse, have split those games.
"We allowed that to happen by not being as aggressive as we were in the first half," said guard Julius Page, who led the Panthers with 19 points.
Thomas, who had 24 points, made it happen for the Fighting Irish, who were coming off a loss at Seton Hall.
"He's a big-time winner, and he makes the rest of our group follow along," Irish coach Mike Brey said.
In other games involving ranked teams Sunday, it was: Georgia Tech 90, No. 8 Maryland 84; No. 9 Duke 65, Clemson 55; Cincinnati 61, No. 11 Oklahoma State 50; No. 15 Marquette 68, No. 14 Wake Forest 61; No. 16 Illinois 76, Ohio State 57; No. 21 Missouri 82, Texas Tech 73; and No. 25 Stanford 84, Oregon State 73.
Knight's only basket of the game was a 3-pointer with 32 seconds left that tied it at 64. He and Thomas then had a quick conversation.
"He said, 'This is the way it's supposed to be,"' Thomas said. "I said, 'You're right."'
Thomas, who was just 2-of-15 from the field against the Panthers in a 72-55 loss at Pittsburgh last month, then came up with the winning play.
Knight said he talked with Thomas again just before the final inbounds play to let him know he wasn't happy with what Thomas had done.
"I told him he cheated because he was supposed to take the shot," Knight said. "I said, 'It was just me and you, and you cheated and passed."'
Georgia Tech 90, No. 8 Maryland 84 At Atlanta, B.J. Elder scored 23 points and freshman Jarrett Jack had a career-high 20 as the Yellow Jackets (12-8, 5-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) handed the defending national champions their second straight loss.
