Grambling QB wins Gaither Award

The Associated Press

ATLANTA - Grambling State quarterback Bruce Eugene, who led Division I-AA in passing yards and total offense, won the Alonzo S. "Jake" Gaither Award on Saturday.

The award, presented by the 100% Wrong Club of Atlanta, recognizes the nation's top football player from a historically black college or university.

Eugene, a sophomore, passed for 4,455 yards and 43 touchdowns last season, both school records. He rushed for 515 yards and nine touchdowns.

Behind Eugene, Grambling finished 11-2 and won the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship for the third straight season.

The Gaither Award was established in 1934, one year before the Heisman Trophy.
