Lumpkins rides win No. 2,000 at Turfway

The Enquirer and wire reports

Jason Lumpkins, Turfway Park's leading rider, reached a riding milestone Friday night, piloting home his 2,000th career victory aboard A May Zing Devil in the first race.

Propelled by four five-win days since Jan. 1, Lumpkins rode 48 winners during the month to reach No. 2,000.

"I wasn't sure I was going to get there," said Lumpkins, who won the race in a photo finish with Unfaced. "It's a good feeling. I knew I was getting close. I said after I won 1,000 that I would just count (the wins) as they come, and mthat's what I'll continue to do."

At his current pace, Lumpkins could reach several other milestones during the winter-spring meet, which runs through April m 3. He is chasing Kris Prather's 2001 records of six wins on one card and 109 wins for a meet.

Today, Lumpkins will ride program favorite and Turfway Prevue winner Champali for trainer Greg Foley in the 1-mile, $50,000 WEBN Stakes for 3-year-olds, the second of three preps leading up to the $500,000 Lane's End Stakes on March 22.
