Cinergy Corp. and four other coal-burning utilities are the targets of global warming proxy resolutions to be put before their shareholders by an alliance of environmental and investor groups.
The alliance, which includes the Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Economics (and the Presbyterian Church, will outline their resolution for the investor-owned utilities that they've labeled the "filthy five'' during a teleconference this afternoon.
The other utilities are American Electric Power in Columbus, Southern Co. in Atlanta, TXU Corp. in Dallas and Xcel Energy in Minneapolis. All five utilities are the largest emitters of carbon dioxide, which has been linked to global warming, according to coalition.
Representatives of the coalition declined to release details of their proxy resolution before today's announcement.
Cinergy Chairman Jim Rogers has expressed a willingness to accept limits on utility carbon dioxide emissions if they are part of comprehensive environmental legislation.
