Tristate A.M. Report

Compiled from staff and wire reports

Remains ID'd as missing woman

DELHI TWP. - The Hamilton County Coroner's Office on Thursday said skeletal remains found in thick woods off Hillside Avenue on Wednesday were those of Paula Phillips, 24, who was last seen leaving a Price Hill bar in March after a fight with her boyfriend.

Police scoured the woods for more evidence Thursday, one day after two hikers discovered the remains there.

"It's painstaking, tedious work," Delhi Police Chief Tom Bauer said at the scene Thursday, as Delhi officers and Cincinnati crime unit personnel examined the area.

The site is about 50 feet north of Hillside Avenue, in the 5200 block, and is obscured from Hillside motorists by brush.

3 people die in 2 single-car accidents

Two single-vehicle crashes in Greater Cincinnati killed three people Thursday, including a woman and her 2-year-old granddaughter.

The first accident occurred just after 7:30 a.m. on Ohio 133 about two miles north of Felicity in Clermont County. Patricia K. Riley, 50, of Felicity and her granddaughter, Breanna Riley, 2, died in that crash.

Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers say Mrs. Riley was driving a 1993 Mercury Sable north on Ohio 133 when she swerved into the oncoming lane, overcorrected and slid off the right side of the road. The vehicle's roof struck a tree.

About 90 minutes later, a crash in the 5500 block of Lawrenceburg Road in Whitewater Township claimed the life of a West Harrison, Ind., man.

Gilbert F. Hampson, 73, was pronounced dead at the scene. Hamilton County sheriff's deputies say Mr. Hampson was driving a 1979 Chevrolet farm truck south on Lawrenceburg Road north of Bond Road when a tire failed and he lost control.

The truck went off the right side of the road, hit a utility pole, traveled down an embankment and struck a large tree.

Man seeks help at gas station after stabbing

FELICITY - Doug Sizemore was working in his Felicity Payless gas station on Market Street on Thursday morning when a Bethel-area man came in pleading for help, saying he had been stabbed, then hit the floor - as if he were afraid his attackers would follow him.

"He was conscious the whole time," said Mr. Sizemore, who locked the door to protect the man, then called 911.

Michael Edwards, 20, was in serious condition later Thursday with multiple stab wounds at University Hospital..

Two people are being questioned.

Ex-Delta attendant gets $770,000 in suit

A jury Thursday awarded a former employee of Delta Air Lines $770,000 in federal District Court in Covington, ruling that the airline had unfairly discriminated against her because of her age.

Joyce Ziegler, 56, of Union, had worked for Delta as a flight attendant at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport for 27 years. She was terminated in July, 1999.

Ms. Ziegler had asked for a minimum of $355,000 in back pay and emotional distress, said her attorney, Randy Freking.

His client was terminated after she was accused of traveling for free with the airlines while on sick leave, Mr. Freking said. However, flight attendant rules allow anyone on approved sick leave to use nonrevenue passes he said.

Amelia teacher sentenced to 3 years

BATAVIA - A former Amelia High School teacher was sentenced Thursday to three years in prison for having sex with students.

Jeffrey C. Sears, 41, pleaded guilty last month to two counts of sexual battery. The former English teacher and coach admitted the incidents, involving two girls, occurred in the 1997-98 school year.
