Today's Bowl Game Previews

Humanitarian Bowl

Iowa State (7-6)

vs. Boise State (11-1)

When: Noon today.

Where: BSU Stadium,

Boise, Idaho.

TV: ESPN.

Line: Boise State by 111/2.

Series record: First meeting.

Last meeting: First meeting.

Bowl records: Iowa State 1-5, Boise State 2-0.

Last bowl appearance: Iowa State lost to Alabama 14-13 in the 2000 Independence Bowl; Boise State beat UTEP 38-23 in the 2001 Humanitarian Bowl.

Coaches: Iowa State's Dan McCarney (36-56, eighth season); Boise State's Dan Hawkins (19-5, second season).

What to look for: Iowa State got off to a hot start, then faded badly when QB Seneca Wallace and the Cyclones met the Big 12's elite programs (Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas State and Colorado). They face Boise State on its home field, and the Broncos have won 25 of their last 26 home games.

Sun Bowl

Washington (7-5)

vs. Purdue (6-6)

When: 2 p.m. today.

Where: Sun Bowl,

El Paso, Texas.

TV: CBS (Chs. 12, 7).

Line: Washington by 3.

Series record: Washington leads 7-1-1.

Last meeting: 2001 Rose Bowl, Washington 34-24.

Bowl records: Washington 15-13-1, Purdue 6-4.

Last bowl appearance: Washington lost to Texas 47-43 in the 2001 Holiday Bowl; Purdue lost to Washington State 33-27 in the 2001 Sun Bowl.

Coaches: Washington's Rick Neuheisel (33-15, fourth season; 66-29 overall); Purdue's Joe Tiller (45-28, sixth season; 84-58-1 overall).

What to look for: Purdue has a strong defense, 21st in the nation, and the No.1 pass defense in the Big Ten. Containing Washington's sensational sophomore WR Reggie Williams is a high priority. The Boilermakers have been hurt by the big pass.

Liberty Bowl

Colorado State (10-3)

vs. TCU (9-2)

When: 3:30 p.m., today.

Where: Liberty Bowl,

Memphis, Tenn.

TV: ESPN.

Line: Colorado State by 5.

Series record: Colorado State leads 1-0.

Last meeting: 1998, Colorado State 42-21.

Bowl records: Colorado State 4-4, TCU 6-11-1.

Last bowl appearance: Colorado State beat North Texas 45-20 in the 2001 New Orleans Bowl; TCU lost to Texas A&M 28-9 in the 2001 Galleryfurniture.com Bowl.

Coaches: Colorado State's Sonny Lubick (84-37, 10th season; 105-56 overall); TCU's Gary Patterson (15-9, second season).

What to look for: One of six bowl games pitting conference champions against one another. Texas Christian, the nation's best defense against the run (62.6 ypg.) and second-best total defense (249.4 ypg.), meets Colorado State, which has the nation's 24th-best offense (407.8 ypg.).

Silicon Valley Classic

Fresno State (8-5)

vs. Georgia Tech (7-5)

When: 3:30 p.m. today.

Where: Spartan Stadium,

San Jose, Calif.

TV: ESPN2.

Line: Georgia Tech by 61/2.

Series record: First meeting.

Last meeting: First meeting.

Bowl records: Fresno State 8-8, Georgia Tech 20-10.

Last bowl appearance: Fresno State lost to Michigan State 44-35 in the 2001 Silicon Valley Classic; Georgia Tech beat Stanford 24-14 in the 2001 Seattle Bowl.

Coaches: Fresno's Pat Hill (45-30, sixth season); Georgia Tech's Chan Gailey (7-5 first season; 31-16).

What to look for: Georgia Tech will likely rely on the pass with Tony Hollings and Gordon Clinkscale, the top two running backs, sidelined with injuries.

Peach Bowl

Maryland (10-3)

vs. Tennessee (8-4)

When: 7:30 p.m. today.

Where: Georgia Dome, Atlanta.

TV: ESPN.

Line: Maryland by 1.

Series record: Tennessee leads 5-2.

Last meeting: 1984 Sun Bowl, Maryland 28-27.

Bowl records: Maryland 6-10-2, Tennessee 23-19.

Last bowl appearance: Maryland lost to Florida 56-23 in the 2002 Orange Bowl; Tennessee beat Michigan 45-17 in the 2002 Citrus Bowl.

Coaches: Maryland's Ralph Friedgen (20-5, second season); Tennessee's Phillip Fulmer (103-24, 11th season).

What to look for: Both teams sustained injuries during the season that prevented them from winning enough games to play on New Year's Day. Despite the injuries - notably Maryland RB Bruce Perry and Tennessee WR Kelley Washington - neither team quit playing hard.

San Francisco Bowl

Air Force (8-4)

vs. Virginia Tech (9-4)

When: 10:30 p.m. today.

Where: Pacific Bell Park.

TV: ESPN2.

Line: Virginia Tech by 111/2.

Series record: Air Force leads 1-0.

Last meeting: 1984 Independence Bowl, Air Force 23-7.

Bowl records: Air Force 8-7-1, Virginia Tech 5-10.

Last bowl appearance: Air Force beat Fresno State 37-34 in the 2000 Silicon Valley Classic; Virginia Tech lost to Florida State 30-17 in the 2002 Gator Bowl.

Coaches: Virginia Tech's Frank Beamer (116-69-2, 16th season; 158-92-4 overall); Air Force's Fisher DeBerry (149-82-1, 19th season).

What to look for: A pass, which will be a rare sight in this game. Air Force leads the nation in rushing with 314.5 yards per game. Virginia Tech relies on the potent duo backfield of Lee Suggs and Kevin Jones.
