Central Florida knocks off No. 25 College of Charleston

ORLANDO, Fla. - Ed Dotson scored 18 points and Ray Abellard added 16 as Central Florida beat No. 25 College of Charleston 82-64 Thursday night for its first victory over a ranked team. Thomas Mobley and Zeke Johnson scored 15 points each for College of Charleston, which opened the season with six straight wins. It's the most points allowed by the Cougars since an 84-63 loss at Georgia on Nov. 16, 1998. Central Florida closed out the first half with an 11-2 run for a 47-26 lead at the break. Both William Bakanowsky and Al Miller hit 3-pointers during the run. Zeke Johnson and Mobley hit consecutive baskets to get College of Charleston within 47-30 two minutes into the second half. But the Golden Knights, keyed by three 3-pointers from Abellard, led 62-37 with 14 minutes to play. College of Charleston made a comeback bid midway through the second half. Marcus Johnson's four baskets and three free throws helped cut its deficit to 67-52 with 7:40 left. Marius Boyd had a layup, and Dotson's slam boosted Central Florida's lead to 75-58 at the four-minute mark. Miller went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line during the game's final two minutes. College of Charleston was called for two first-half technical fouls. Andre Sweet chipped in 10 points as Seton Hall (3-1) won its second straight game and beat the Hawks (1-4) for the fourth time in as many meetings between the New Jersey schools. Dwayne Byfield had 16 points and Kevin Owens added 14 points for Monmouth. Blake Hamilton scored 13 points. Seton Hall ran off a 20-7 spurt at the end of the first half to take a 33-20 lead. The Pirates led by as many as 18 points in the second half. WomenXavier 68, Lipscomb 67 Amy Waugh scored 18 points as the Musketeers (5-1) held off the Bisons (2-5). Xavier freshman Tara Boothe scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Reetta Piipari scored 15 points and freshman Kristy Wallner added a career-high 12 for the Musketeers. XU led 22-17 with eight minutes to play in the first half, but Lipscomb went on an 11-5 run to take a one-point halftime lead. The game remained close in the second half. The Bisons took a 64-63 lead on a 3-pointer with just more than two minutes to play, but Wallner's trey restored XU's advantage, and Piipari's jumper put the Musketeers ahead 68-64 with 42.1 seconds left. Another Bisons 3-pointer made the score 68-67, and XU missed the front end of a 1-and-1 free-throw opportunity to give Lipscomb one more chance before Alexis Henderson forced a turnover in the final seconds. Courtney Boynton led Lipscomb with 22 points, and Katie Beth Pate added 16 points and 10 rebounds. The Musketeers shot just 38 percent (12-of-32) in the first half, but went 14-of-24 in the second.
