Locals: King's eight treys lead No. 25 UC women


Bearcats wallop Coastal Carolina in women's game

Valerie King hit a school-record eight 3-pointers en route to her 26 points to pace the No. 25 University of Cincinnati (4-1) women's team to a 92-54 victory over Coastal Carolina (3-2) Saturday night.

King registered four of her treys, including the record seventh, in the second half to break open the victory for the Bearcats as they mounted a 24-0 run to sink the Lady Chanticleers.

UC's Debbie Merrill added 23 points and 10 rebounds for the 12th double-double of her career.

Nikki Reddick led Coastal Carolina with 25., while Courtney Brown added 12.

XU rolled in the opening game of the Provident Bank Xavier Invitational at Cintas Center.

The Musketeers (3-1) will face Michigan in the championship game of the Provident Bank Xavier Invitational at 3 p.m. today at Cintas Center.

The Musketeers opened an early lead on the Blue Devils and went deep into the bench in the win.

Senior Reetta Piipari led Xavier with 16 points. Classmate Amy Waugh was perfect on three shots from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers, and in five attempts from the foul line to end with 13 points.

Freshman Tara Boothe, a graduate of Highlands High, had 14 points for XU while Aida Sarajlija scored 10 off the bench.

OXFORD - Miami (4-1) christened the new scoreboard at Millett Hall with a record 110 points.

Colleen Day paced scored eight of Miami's first 16 points for a 16-4 lead, and the rout was on.

LOUISVILLE - Brenden Stowers scored 23 points as NKU improved to 7-0, 4-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Stowers also had five assists and made eight of 13 shots from the field. Mike Kelsey scored 18 points for the Norse, who shot 59.7 percent from the field. Chris Seabrooks had a career-high 17 points.

The Norse have beaten the Knights 16 consecutive times.

Bellarmine's last win against NKU came Feb.3, 1994 - 73-72 win in Regents Hall.
