UC-Xavier Q&A
No deal yet for Logan, Warriors
By Bill Koch and Dustin Dow
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Q, from KB: Where is Steve Logan playing? He is not listed on the Golden State Warriors roster or any other NBA roster. Surely he did not get cut.
A: No, Logan did not get cut, but he's not playing anywhere either. At least not yet. He was selected by the Golden State Warriors as the first pick of the second round. He and the Warriors reportedly agreed to contract terms, but the Warriors wouldn't sign him until he fully rehabilitated a foot injury. The rehab process is complete, and if the Warriors decide Logan is healthy and in basketball shape, he could sign within the next week to 10 days.
Q, from Greg: Do you know if Melvin Levett is still playing basketball anywhere?
A: No, he isn't. He sometimes can be seen at UC practices. He was selected by the Detroit Pistons with the 54th pick in the 1999 draft and then traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, but he never played in the NBA. He had a brief stint overseas and played with the Cincinnati Stuff of the International Basketball League and the Kentucky ProCats of the American Basketball Association.
Q, from Ken: How are basketball referees chosen for league games, non-league games and tournaments? Noticed some visiting teams have contracts to bring their own referees to an arena for non-league games.
A: Officials for league games are assigned by the conference office. Coaches do not have the right to veto any official. In non-league games, the choice of officials is worked out in the contract. For example, when UC played Valparaiso on Monday, both schools agreed on officials from the Mid-Continent Conference. When UC returns the game to Valpo, Conference USA officials probably will be used.
In the case of a one-shot game like Florida A&M where there was no return game in the contract, C-USA officials were used. When UC plays in a tournament, or an event like the Jimmy V Classic later this month, the tournament promoters secure the officials.
Q, from Shane in Illinois: What do you think about Xavier's freshmen? Are they good enough to make an impact?
A: Clearly, Dedrick Finn, who became a starter after two games, is quite talented. The key for him is to make plays when defenses focus on other players. Angelo Smith isn't seeing much playing time right now, but he is a player who could work himself into the lineup through hard work in practice during the A-10 season.
Q, from Jason in Cincinnati: How will having Dedrick Finn and Lionel Chalmers in the game at the same time affect Xavier against bigger teams?
A: I'm not sure it's really that much of a problem. Xavier already has size at the shooting guard in Romain Sato who is 6 feet 5 and jumps higher than anyone else on the court for rebounds. He is also able to guard most players, so that's not an issue either. And Xavier isn't losing any size down low with David West and either Anthony Myles or Will Caudle at center. Basically, Xavier lost five inches at the three-spot by swapping Chalmers for Dave Young, but it has allowed Chalmers to increase his scoring opportunities and worked well against Purdue, a bigger team.
