Indiana 80, Maryland 74
The Associated Press
Tom Coverdale waited a long time for a second chance at Maryland. The senior guard from Indiana didn't waste it. Coverdale, who was hobbled by a badly sprained left ankle when the teams met for the national championship last April, led the 10th-ranked Hoosiers in every way possible Tuesday night.
He matched his career high with 30 points in the 80-74 overtime victory over the ninth-ranked Terrapins in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge. He rallied the Hoosiers from a 14-point deficit in the first half and then settled the team down in the overtime.
"Whenever you sit around all summer and think about you're 11 minutes away from a national championship and that's all you think about, of course, it's going to mean something extra," Coverdale said. "I'm real happy with this win."
Coverdale was 8-of-16 from the field, including 5-of-10 from 3-point range, and 9-of-10 at the free-throw line.
Steve Blake had 22 points for Maryland (3-1) and he almost was the hero, but his halfcourt heave as regulation ended was waved off.
With 7.1 seconds to go, Indiana freshman Sean Kline made one of two free throws to tie it at 68. Indiana rebounded the miss and had two shots to win it. Both missed and when Coverdale's errant 3-pointer bounced to midcourt, Blake scooped it up and heaved it in.
The Maryland players began celebrating as the officials went to the scorer's table to view a replay.
"It definitely went in, I thought I got it off in time," Blake said. "They looked at instant replay and they didn't think so. Everyone will probably look at ESPN and have their own decision on that."
That gave Indiana another opportunity to beat Maryland, which defeated the Hoosiers 64-52 in the national championship game.
"I was hoping," Coverdale said. "I didn't think it counted at first, but you never know. I was just relieved we got another chance to play in overtime."
Maryland took a 72-69 lead in the overtime, but Kline made two of four free throws and Jeff Newton's putback with 2:31 to go gave Indiana a 73-72 lead. Kline made a layup, Marshall Strickland a 3-pointer and Kline two more free throws to seal the win.
