UCLA 0-2 for first time in 41 years

Top 25 roundup

The Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS - Freshman J.J. Redick scored 20 points, leading Duke past UCLA at the Wooden Tradition in a game pitting two programs with a total of 14 national titles.

John Wooden, who coached UCLA to 10 of its 11 NCAA championships, presented Duke with a trophy for winning the game. It might have upset him to see the Bruins drop to 0-2 for the first time since 1961, when Wooden was in charge.

Nick Horvath added 16 points to help Duke improve to 7-1 against the Bruins under coach Mike Krzyzewski. The Blue Devils (3-0) used a 22-6 burst in the second half to open a 21-point lead.

Jason Kapono scored 19 points for the Bruins.

No. 3 Texas 78, Seton Hall 61

HOUSTON - Deginald Erskin scored 22 of his career-high 24 points in the second half and T.J. Ford added 19 to lead No. 3 Texas to a 78-61 victory over Seton Hall on Saturday.

The Longhorns (4-0) and Pirates (1-1) played the second game of a doubleheader in Reliant Stadium, home of the NFL's Houston Texans, which was converted to a basketball arena for the Space City Classic.

Texas A&M beat Louisiana State 79-77 earlier Saturday.

J.R. Morris led Seton Hall with 12 points and Andre Barrett added 11.

No. 5 Pittsburgh 89, Ark.-Pine Bluff 49

PITTSBURGH - Toree Morris scored seven consecutive points early in an 18-point Pittsburgh run that broke open an unexpectedly tight game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Pitt (3-0) withstood another poor shooting night by star Brandin Knight, pulling away to outscore the Lions 47-11 over the final 15 minutes.

The Lions (0-4), picked to finish last in the SWAC, led much of the first half while shooting 8-of-13 from 3-point range.

Knight, a third-team All-American, was 4-of-12 during an 11-point night. Chevy Troutman came off the bench to lead the Panthers with 15 points, and Julius Page scored 14.

Billy Hall scored 15 points but Arkansas-Pine Bluff, one of the nation's worst Division I teams, has lost 11 in a row and 30 of 32 since last season.

No. 8 Oklahoma 75, Prairie View 63

NORMAN, Okla. - Hollis Price scored 13 of Oklahoma's final 18 points, leading the Sooners to a tougher-than-expected victory over Prairie View A&M.

The Sooners (3-1) only led 38-31 at halftime, then saw Prairie View (1-1) score the first nine points of the second half to take the lead.

Price and Ebi Ere scored 16 points apiece for Oklahoma.

Malachi Thurston scored 16 points for Prairie View, which shot 53 percent from the field.

Oklahoma State 64, No. 9 Michigan State 61

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Victor Williams hit six free throws in the final two minutes and Oklahoma State upset Michigan State for third place in the Great Alaska Shootout.

The Cowboys' Tony Allen blocked a shot by Alan Anderson with 10 seconds remaining and Oklahoma State leading 62-61. After two free throws by Williams, Rashi Johnson missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer that would have tied it for the Spartans (2-2), who lost for the second consecutive night.

Melvin Sanders led Oklahoma State (3-1) with 18 points. Ivan McFarlin scored 15 points and pulled down seven rebounds before fouling out with 6:21 remaining. Williams added 14 points

Aloysius Anagonye had 21 points and eight rebounds for Michigan State, which lost to Villanova on Friday night.

No. 10 Oregon 88, Pacific 69

EUGENE, Ore. - Luke Ridnour had 24 points and seven assists as Oregon beat Pacific.

Andre Joseph and James Davis added 14 points each, and reserve freshman center Ian Crosswhite scored 12 for the Ducks, who cruised to victory despite getting only eight points from star forward Luke Jackson.

Jackson, who was 2-for-13 from the field, did have a career-high 12 rebounds.

Oregon (3-0) won its 19th straight game at McArthur Court and is closing in on the school record of 23, set from 1937-39.

Myree Bowden led Pacific (1-2) with 20 points.

No. 11 Maryland 89, Duquesne 39

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Drew Nicholas scored 19 points and Ryan Randle added a career-high 16 as Maryland extended its nonconference home winning streak to 87 games with a rout of Duquesne.

The defending NCAA champions never trailed against the error-prone Dukes (1-3), who had more turnovers (20) than points (19) in the first half.

Nicholas scored all 19 of his points before halftime, helping Maryland (3-0) build a 31-point lead. Several of his baskets came off passes from Steve Blake, who had 10 of his 13 assists in the first half.

Maryland's nonconference winning streak at home, which began in 1989 and includes two victories over Duquesne, is the longest such run in the nation.

The Terrapins, who allowed 49 points in each of their first two games, last held three straight opponents under 50 points in February 1954.

No. 18 Missouri 81, Austin Peay 46

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Rickey Paulding had 14 points and nine rebounds and guard Jimmy McKinney returned from an injury as Missouri routed Austin Peay.

Arthur Johnson had 16 points and three steals, and Ricky Clemons added nine points and eight assists for the Tigers (2-0).

McKinney, the team's top recruit, returned wearing a protective mask after missing nearly a month with a broken bone above his right eye. He had eight points in 14 minutes.

Corey Gipson scored 15 points for Austin Peay (2-1).

No. 22 Tulsa 61, Arkansas 60

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Kevin Johnson made a free throw to give Tulsa a six-point lead with 2:24 left, and the Golden Hurricane went scoreless the rest of the way but hung on to beat Arkansas.

Freshman point guard Eric Ferguson made a 3-pointer for Arkansas (1-2), and and Alonzo Lane's basket off a drive cut the lead to one with 41 seconds to go.

But Ferguson's shot from just past midcourt as time expired bounced off the backboard and the rim.

Antonio Reed scored 17 points for Tulsa (3-0), and Dante Swanson had 16. Johnson had 13 points and eight rebounds.

Ferguson scored 14 points and Dionisio Gomez had 13 points and 12 rebounds for Arkansas, which had beaten Tulsa seven straight times since 1987.

The Golden Hurricane had not won in Fayetteville since 1974.

No. 23 Mississippi St. 100, Jacksonville 65

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Timmy Bowers had 21 points, including four 3-pointers, as Mississippi State shot 58 percent in an easy win over Jacksonville.

Bowers led five scorers in double figures and the Bulldogs (2-1) won their second straight game without star center Mario Austin. The school is still waiting for a ruling on Austin's eligibility after the NCAA determined he was mistakenly certified to play as a freshman.

Mississippi State dropped its opening game to Louisiana-Lafayette but was never in danger of losing to Jacksonville (3-2), which got 30 points from Kevin Sheppard.

The Bulldogs' bench outscored Jacksonville's reserves 45-6.

No. 24 Minnesota 72, No. 17 Georgia 69

MINNEAPOLIS - Michael Bauer's 3-pointer rolled in at the buzzer to give Minnesota a victory over Georgia.

Bauer, who missed two practices this week with a shoulder injury, scored 10 points for the Golden Gophers (2-0).

He launched his final shot from the top of the key and watched it bounce around the rim before falling in. Then, eyes wide open, he turned and raced toward the student section of the stands to celebrate.

Jarvis Hayes, who had 17 of his 21 points in the second half, helped Georgia (1-3) rally from a six-point deficit with 1:40 left. He swished a 3-pointer to tie it at 69 with 14.7 seconds to go.

No. 25 Wisconsin 69, Wisconsin-Green Bay 52

GREEN BAY, Wis. - Freddie Owens scored 19 points and Kirk Penney added 18 as Wisconsin beat Wisconsin-Green Bay.

The Badgers, who committed only seven turnovers, improved to 4-0 for the first time since they opened the 1996-97 season with six straight wins.

They held UWGB to 37.5 percent shooting from the floor and forced 17 turnovers. Brandon Hansen led the Phoenix (1-3) with 14 points in their first regular-season game at the new Resch Center.

The near-capacity crowd of 9,705 was the largest to watch a college basketball game in Green Bay.
