High-scoring McGrady breaks Shaq record
The Associated Press
SEATTLE- Tracy McGrady was frustrated when his shots weren't falling in the first quarter.By the second quarter, it wasn't a problem any more.
McGrady scored 13 of his 41 points in the final seven minutes of the second period as the Orlando Magic beat the Seattle SuperSonics 101-84 Tuesday night.
McGrady posted his sixth straight game with at least 30.
"I felt good at the start of the game, but I was starting to get worried when my shots weren't going down in the first quarter," said McGrady, who shot 4-of-11 in the first quarter. "I was wondering if it was going to be one of those days."
In addition to pulling down 12 rebounds, McGrady broke Shaquille O'Neal's franchise record of five straight games with at least 30 points.
"We didn't take the ball out of Tracy's hands early," said Sonics coach Nate McMillan. "We allowed him to get hot before we started our double-teaming and our rotations."
The combination of McGrady shooting 16-of-29 and his team going 11-of-22 from 3-point range helped snap Seattle's four-game winning streak.
"We did a great job just taking our time and getting open looks and staying out of Tracy's way," Grant Hill said.
Darrell Armstrong scored 19, shooting 5-of-7 from 3-point range.
After missing Sunday's game with a sore left ankle, Hill returned for the Magic and had 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Seattle entered the game as the league's top shooting team from 3-point range, averaging 41.1 percent, but struggled from outside the arc and went only 2-of-15 on 3-pointers.
"We really made an effort to get a hand up on shots, rotating, making guys make one more pass and still contesting shots," said Magic point guard Jacque Vaughn.
Orlando has won two of its first four games on its longest road trip of the season, playing six games in nine days.
"If we can take the final two games of this trip, it will definitely be considered a great success," said Mike Miller, who scored 14 points despite spraining his right ankle in the third quarter.
Rashard Lewis led the Sonics with 23 points. Gary Payton and Desmond Mason had 14 each.
Seattle's largest lead was seven. On a fast break, Brent Barry lobbed a pass off the glass and Desmond Mason caught it in mid-air and slammed it through for a 38-31 advantage with 7:44 to play in the half.
Orlando responded by outscoring Seattle 21-7 before the break.
