Enquirer Page Two power rankings

By Mike Ball
The Cincinnati Enquirer

The top five

1. Great American Ball Park. Sure, everyone was more excited about the explosions at Cinergy Field. But did you see our new park with some of the lights on? Awesome. (Remember, only 97 days until pitchers and catchers report).

2. College football. Notre Dame survives. Ohio State survives. Kentucky is heartbroken. Every single game means something. It's the best sport going.

3. Jeff Blake. Hey, who'd've thought that charge to 8-8 behind Bombin' Blake in '96 would turn out to be the high point of the decade?

4. The Bearcats. Man, it feels great to have the ol' Keg of Nails back.

5. The Lakers. They have a Samaki (Walker) and a (Soumaila) Samake. Cool.

The bottom five

1. Denny Neagle. The former Red has requested a trade from the Rockies. He admitted he hadn't pitched well - try 8-11 with a 5.26 ERA - but said he wanted "to go to a place I'm more appreciated." Guess that $8million salary was a sign of disrespect.

2. Kobe Bryant. Seems the next Michael Jordan is having a little trouble without Shaq Daddy in the middle. Took him 47 shots to score 41 points the other night. Who does he think he is, Allen Iverson?

3. The Bengals. Do other teams sign two guys who were out of football in one week?

4. The University of Michigan. The school placed severe sanctions on itself - forfeiting five seasons worth of wins was something. But the cynic in us wonders if they were just trying to beat the NCAA police to the punch. And by the way, Chris Webber: You planning on attending any Michigan alumni functions in the near future?

5. Preseason college basketball awards. Is it us, or is David West the most decorated player in history? We love him. But what happens on the court is what matters.
