Batavia votes turned down a bond issue to build a new elementary school.
The 6.9-mill bond issue would have provided $18.4 million to build a new school for about 1,100 students. The vote was 1,143 to 913.
Batavia superintendent Paul Varney attributed the loss to the economy. The school board will meet in special session today to discuss its next move.
The district has 1,912 students.
