Tristate A.M. Report

Compiled from staff and wire reports

Two drug busts find cocaine, heroin, guns

Two drug busts by Cincinnati police's Street Corner Unit ended with two arrests and the seizure of crack, powder cocaine and heroin.

Street Corner officers arrested Damon Green, 30, of Winton Hills, in Over-the-Rhine on Friday and charged him with drug trafficking, drug possession and illegally having guns, illegal because of a previous drug conviction. Police announced the arrests Tuesday, and said they found nine grams of heroin, more than $7,000 in cash and a .40-caliber Glock handgun.

The night before, they arrested Reco English, 26, after the SWAT team helped execute a search warrant where Mr. English lived on Oesper Avenue in Evanston. Mr. English also was charged with selling drugs, drug possession and illegally having weapons.

At that house, officers said they found more than 67 grams of crack, some powder cocaine, a .38-caliber handgun, a 12-gauge shotgun, a digital scale and $981 in cash.

Mason court clerk gets 10 days for 2nd DUI

MASON - Municipal Court Clerk Neal Huffman will spend 10 days in the Warren County Jail after pleading guilty Tuesday to his second DUI offense in six years.

Mr. Huffman's job status remained in limbo while Judge George Parker decides whether to fire him.

Mr. Huffman, who was suspended without pay because of the Sept. 20 incident, apologized for any embarrassment he caused his family and Judge Parker.

"It's certainly not one of those situations I'm real proud of," the 29-year-old told visiting Judge Rob Lyons of Butler County.

Judge Lyons suspended all but 10 days of a 180-day sentence. He ordered Mr. Huffman to finish the jail term before Jan. 1 and to pay a $500 fine immediately.

The judge also suspended Mr. Huffman's driver's license for two years except for work, job interviews and church services, and impounded his Jeep until Dec. 20.

Mason police arrested Mr. Huffman at 1:21 a.m. after an officer observed him driving the Jeep without headlights near the Mason Mobile Home Court on U.S. 42. Mr. Huffman refused a breath alcohol test and failed field sobriety tests, police said.

Theft, indecency with pumpkin charged

HAMILTON - The arrest report filed Tuesday pretty much says it all: "Defendant admitted to stealing a $30 plastic pumpkin ... and also admitted to having sex with the plastic pumpkin."

Edwin Charles Tobergta, 24, faces charges of theft and public indecency in the Oct. 24 incident that Michelle D. Chambers said she witnessed outside her home on the 2100 block of Freeman Avenue in the city's Lindenwald neighborhood.

The alleged incident involved a 4-foot, inflatable, illuminated pumpkin used as a Halloween decoration.

Mr. Tobergta was released and is scheduled to appear Nov. 12 in Hamilton Municipal Court. The charges he faces are misdemeanors carrying a maximum sentence of six months behind bars.

Boy, 15, suspected in slaying of girl, 17

MEDINA, Ohio - A 15-year-old boy who is to be charged in the death of a 17-year-old girl is being held on charges unrelated to her murder, a Medina County prosecutor said Monday.

Dustin Lynch was arrested in connection with the beating death of Medina High School junior JoLynn Mishne, according to a Montville Township police report.

Prosecutor Dan Holman said the only question was whether the boy would be charged with murder as an adult or a juvenile.

Father charged with hitting coach

SPENCER, Ind. - The father of an Owen Valley High School football player faces a battery charge that he punched the coach after his son was dismissed from the team.

John Stacks, 53, was charged with battery resulting in bodily injury. Mr. Stacks, who is free on bond, had an automatic not guilty plea entered on his behalf during a court appearance. His trial date has not been set.

A Spencer Police Department report said Mr. Stacks became upset after head coach Duane Potts dismissed his son, senior cornerback Justin Stacks, from the team on Oct. 15.

Dognapper gets four-year sentence

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - A judge sentenced a woman who stole a dog and demanded its owner pay $1,000 ransom to four years in prison.

The sentence was part of a plea agreement between Dawn Bailey, 29, and Vigo County prosecutors. Two other cases were dismissed.

Authorities said the Terre Haute woman stole the dog, a shih-tzu named Fuzzy, last December and threatened to kill it if its owner did not give her money.

Suspect sought in Dearborn Co. death

YORKTOWN, Ind. - A man is being sought of the death of 52-year-old found dead Tuesday afternoon in a home in Dearborn County.

The victim, whose name was being withheld pending notification of relatives, was found in a residence at 7978 Hartman Road, the Dearborn County Sheriff's Office said.

Roger Dale Holbrook, 56, who is known to frequent horse race tracks in West Virginia, Kentucky and Arkansas, is being sought in connection with the death, the sheriff's office said. Officials said Mr. Holbrook, who is described as 5-foot-7, 200 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes, is considered armed and dangerous.
