Byrd 17th winner this year

By The Associated Press

PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Jonathan Byrd had a 9-under 63 Sunday to win the Buick Challenge and become the 17th first-time winner on the PGA Tour this year.

Byrd made five straight putts on the back nine at Callaway Gardens, two for eagle, and was within range of the tour's 72-hole scoring record in relation to par.

David Toms put together a strong rally and had an 18-foot birdie putt on the final hole to force a playoff, but it slid over the left edge of the cup. Toms started the final round one stroke out of the lead, shot a 65, and it still wasn't enough.

Byrd made 27 birdies and two eagles over four rounds on the rain-softened Mountain View course. He finished at 27-under 261 and earned $666,000.

Phil Mickelson closed with a 63 to finish third at 265.

---

OKLAHOMA CITY - Tom Watson shot a 5-under 67 and beat Gil Morgan by two strokes to win the Senior Tour Championship.

Watson, who won this event in 2000, earned $440,000 for his first victory of the year on the Senior PGA Tour.

The five-time British Open champion was 3 over after 20 holes, then played the last 52 in a bogey-free 17 under to finish four rounds at Gaillardia Golf & Country Club at 14-under 274.

Morgan struggled down the stretch in a 69 that left him at 276, three strokes ahead of Bob Gilder, who closed with a 68.

Hale Irwin had a 71 and was fourth, seven strokes behind Watson, but he became the first senior golfer to win $3 million in one season.

---

JEJU ISLAND, South Korea - Se Ri Pak shot an even-par 72 to win the wind-swept Nine Bridges Classic by six strokes over Carin Koch.

The South Korean finished at 3-under 213, while Koch had a final-round 73 to wind up at 219. Annika Sorenstam's 76 left her nine shots back, ending her bid to set a record for tournament wins in a year.

Pak's fifth victory of 2002 and 18th on the LPGA Tour was worth $225,000. That boosts Pak's earnings this year to $1,600,518, second only to Sorenstam's $2,467,404.

---

MADRID, Spain - Denmark's Steen Tinning offset four bogeys with eight birdies in a 4-under 67 that gave him a one-stoke victory at the Madrid Open.

Tinning finished at 19-under 265, one stroke ahead of Adam Scott (68), Brian Davis (63) and Andrew Coltart (64) for his second European tour victory.

Ireland's Padraig Harrington, the leader after three rounds, shot a 1-over 72 and slipped to seventh place.

---

PRATTVILLE, Ala. - Third-round leader Patrick Moore was declared the winner of the rain-shortened Buy.com Tour Championship, finishing on top of the money list and leading 15 players who earned promotions to the PGA Tour.

Moore, who won for the third time this year, birdied three of four holes Sunday morning to complete a 6-under 66 that left him at 10-under 206 after 54 holes.

Half the field failed to finish the final round before heavy rain left the Capitol Hill's Senator Course on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail unplayable.

Moore earned $108,000 for the victory and moved into the top spot on the Buy.com money list with $381,965. His third victory of the year earned him a "battlefield promotion" to the PGA Tour, so he is eligible to compete in this week's Southern Farm Bureau Classic.

Steven Alker, Mike Heinen and Jeff Klauk tied for second at 8-under 208.

For the first time since 1993, a player in the top 15 entering this event wasn't bumped out.
