Meet the candidates at Villa Hills club

VILLA HILLS - The Villa Hills Civic Club is sponsoring a "Meet the Candidates Night'' at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the civic club, 729 Rogers Rd.

All candidates running for city office will discuss their platforms and take part in a question and answer session. Candidates also will be available before and after the session to discuss their views.

Ft. Wright offices closed for funeral

FORT WRIGHT - City offices here will be closed today so that employees can attend the funeral of Councilman Donald K. Martin Sr., who died Sunday.

The 66-year-old Fort Wright councilman was the top vote getter in the city council race two years ago and a mentor to many city leaders. The Kenton County deputy sheriff also had previously served as the city's mayor, was the former judge of the city's police court, previously served as a part-time police officer, and was a former volunteer firefighter and life squad member.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. todayat St. Agnes Church in Fort Wright. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery in Fort Mitchell.

Kenton County Clerk Bill Aylor said that it's too late to remove Mr. Martin's name from the ballots in the Nov. 5 election, but a sign will be posted at polling places telling voters that Mr. Martin has died.

Program teaches winterizing homes

ERLANGER - A representative from People Working Cooperatively will present a program on how to winterize your home at 11 a.m. Saturdayat the Erlanger branch of the Kenton County Public Library system, 401 Kenton Lands Rd.

People Working Cooperatively is a nonprofit organization that provides professional home repair, weatherization and maintenance sources for low-income homeowners.Registration is not required. Senior Services offers flu shots

COVINGTON - Senior Services of Northern Kentucky is offering flu shots at its senior centers through the month of November.

The shots are free for anyone who has a Medicare card or cost up to $20 for anyone who doesn't have a Medicare card. Shots will be administered on a first-come, first-served basis.

The schedule is as follows: Bellevue Senior Center, 300 Washington Ave., Bellevue, 9:30 a.m.-noon Nov. 21; Elsmere Senior Center, 179 Dell Ave., Elsmere, 9 a.m.-noon, Nov. 19; Ludlow Senior Center, 808 Elm St., Ludlow, 10 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Nov. 11; Northern Kentucky Senior Center, 34 W. Fifth St., Covington, 10 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Nov.15; Saratoga Senior Center, 798 Saratoga St., Newport, Ky., 1 p.m.-2 p.m. Nov. 19; and Warsaw Senior Center, 205 W. Pearl St., Warsaw; 10:30 a.m.-noon, Oct. 30.

General Mills recalls cans of refried beans

MINNEAPOLIS - Kentucky is one of five states listed in a recall of refried beans that may contain botulism.

General Mills Inc. is recalling 4,080 cans of Old El Paso Traditional Variety Refried Beans.

The cans being recalled are labeled with the UPC code 4600082121 and production date code beginning with the first six characters of H2FF15.

Grayson home explodes; one killed

GRAYSON - An explosion ripped through an eastern Kentucky residence, killing the lone occupant, authorities said.

Arthur Lewis, 48, apparently died as the result of burns and smoke inhalation, said Carter County Coroner George Sparks. An autopsy was scheduled at the state Medical Examiner's Office in Frankfort.

The house on U.S. 60 in Grayson blew up Tuesday, according to Kentucky State Police Sgt. Louie Podunavac's report, "for reasons undetermined."

Deceased priest named in sex suit

LOUISVILLE - A deceased priest accused of taking a boy to pornographic movies and molesting him was named for the first time in a new round of lawsuits Wednesday against the Archdiocese of Louisville.

In one suit, the Rev. Henry G. Vessels is accused of taking the boy to pornographic drive-in movies several times in 1969 and 1970 and molesting him once when the boy spent the night with him..

The plaintiff is Roger D. Kelty, who was 12 at the time of the alleged misconduct. At the time, Father Vessels was pastor at St. Francis Xavier Church in Mount Washington. Rev. Vessels died in 1980 while serving as pastor at a Louisville parish, said archdiocese spokeswoman Cecelia Price.
