Excerpts of 911 transcript

These are excerpts from David Pepper's nine-minute conversation with the 911 operator, which started at 8:37 p.m.:

Operator: “911. What is your emergency?”

Pepper: “Um, do I call you to report a crime that just occurred? Or do I call a different number?”

Operator: “No, you need to call 911 if it just occurred.”

Pepper: “OK, it occurred about 20 minutes ago.”

        Operator: “What happened?”

Pepper: “I was held up at gunpoint.”

Operator: “That would be a robbery, sir. And yes, you need to be calling now.”

Pepper: “I was probably held up around 7:30. Maybe 7:25 or 7:30. And then driven around for 45 to 50 minutes. And there was a gun. ... It looked big. I'm not a gun expert.

“I live on Hill Street in Mount Adams, and I went out to my car to get something out of it. I noticed these two people walking down the street. They were both African-American males. By the way, they told me that if they, um, if it was reported, that they know where I live and they'll come back and take care of me. So I don't know what we do with that part.

“I'm on City Council, I'm also a lawyer. And I'm at my law firm right now, which is 312 Walnut. I drove my car down from where they left me to here.

“What happened with the car was basically, I was on the passenger side. They held a gun to me. And they asked me how much money I had. And then I didn't have enough. I had about 60, 70 bucks. So I got in the car, they told me to get in the car. Which I did. I don't know if that's smart or not, but I did.

“And one guy got in the back, the other guy got in the passenger seat and we drove around to find an ATM. We went to one ATM. ... I took out $400, which was the most I could take out. Then we drove downtown, where I again, I tried to get them more money. But I told them the ATM has that limit and I couldn't get any more money. So then we drove back to Mount Adams, I guess, and then they blindfolded me and they put me in the car and they ran off.

“At the end, they blindfolded me so they could run. And I sat there for about 10 minutes and then they disappeared.

“I told them (I was a council member) because I was trying to tell them why they shouldn't kill me. Because one guy was talking about it. I tried to give them a good political speech about changing the city.”
