HAMILTON - When Christopher Riley heard a man yelling at a woman and tried to intervene, he ended up with 19 stab wounds and nearly was killed, authorities said.

In an indictment made public Wednesday, Donnell Goodbread, 23, of Hamilton, is accused in the attempted murder and felonious assault of Mr. Riley. After the attack around midnight July 29 in Park Avenue Park, the 17-year-old victim was flown to University Hospital. He underwent eight hours of surgery for wounds "all over the body," including his head, arms, legs, back and torso, said Butler County Assistant Prosecutor Craig Hedric.

The most serious charge Mr. Goodbread faces, attempted murder, carries a prison term of three to 10 years if he's convicted. He is being held in the Butler County Jail awaiting an Oct. 30 court date.

Also among the 48 indictments that a Butler County grand jury released Wednesday: charges against a Fairfield man in an Aug. 19 hostage situation and standoff with police. The 36-year-old man is charged with aggravated burglary, four counts of kidnapping, rape and inducing panic.

After holding his 5-year-old daughter and 38-year-old wife against their will, he released the daughter and raped the wife, Mr. Hedric said.

To safeguard the identity of the victim, the Enquirer is not naming the defendant.
