Super Mario tallies two
Associated Press
PITTSBURGH - Mario Lemieux scored his first two goals since late January and Aleksey Morozov had two goals in the opening six minutes as the Pittsburgh Penguins bounced back from their worst opening game loss ever, beating the New York Rangers 6-0 Saturday night.
Defenseman Dick Tarnstrom, scratched from the Penguins' 6-0 loss Thursday to Toronto, added a goal and two assists as Pittsburgh opened a 4-0 lead with 61/2 minutes left in the first period.
Penguins goalie Jean-Sebastien Aubin, replacing opening game starter Johan Hedberg, turned aside 30 shots for his first victory at home since March 10, 2001, and his first shutout since Feb. 14, 2000, against Vancouver. He won only three times overall last season, but is 7-1-2 in his career against the Rangers.
Morozov enjoyed a four-point night, also setting up two goals, as Pittsburgh ended an 11-game winless streak (0-9-1-1) dating to last season.
The Rangers played their third game in four nights and looked it, especially without stars Eric Lindros (one-game suspension) and Pavel Bure (strep throat).
Sabres 6, Canadiens 1
MONTREAL - Taylor Pyatt scored twice and Martin Biron made 19 saves as the Buffalo routed Montreal in the Canadiens' home opener.
Tim Connolly, Miroslav Satan, Jochen Hecht and Vaclav Varada also scored for Buffalo as the Sabres beat league MVP Jose Theodore for all six goals.
Chris Gratton and J.P. Dumont each had two assists for Buffalo, which has scored 11 goals in two games after opening the season Thursday night with a 5-1 win over the New York Islanders.
Defenseman Patrice Brisebois scored the lone goal for Montreal, which won its opener 4-1 over the Rangers in New York on Friday night.
Capitals 2, Islanders 1
UNIONDALE, N.Y. - Jaromir Jagr scored a power-play goal with 4:36 left, lifting Washington over the New York Islanders in a game in which the Capitals had only 14 shots.
Calle Johansson's poorly struck shot trickled to Jagr near the right post. He sent the puck toward goaltender Chris Osgood, who got his right pad on it but knocked it into the net.
Alexei Yashin of the Islanders opened the scoring in the first period, beating Olaf Kolzig. Glen Metropolit tied it 1-1 at 15:08 of the second period during a delayed penalty on Washington's eighth shot.
Panthers 5, Thrashers 4, OT
ATLANTA - Olli Jokinen scored off a rebound with 10.2 seconds left in overtime as Florida overcame a hat trick by Shawn McEachern to beat Atlanta.
The teams were skating 3-on-3 after penalties five seconds apart in the extra period. Florida goaltender Roberto Luongo was called for delay of game, and Ilya Kovalchuk was caught with an illegal stick.
Jokinen also scored the tying goal with 8:37 left in regulation on the power play, beating Pasi Nurminen with a backhander.
Atlanta's Vyacheslav Kozlov had a chance to win it in overtime. He skated in alone but Luongo blocked the shot with 2:30 left.
Senators 2, Maple Leafs 1
TORONTO - Petr Schastlivy scored on a power play with 22 seconds left, sending Ottawa past Toronto and spoiling the Maple Leafs' home opener.
Patrick Lalime made 22 saves for the Senators, who have been knocked out of the playoffs by the Maple Leafs the last three seasons.
After Toronto's Travis Green received a roughing penalty, Schastlivy chased down the puck by the right faceoff circle and fired a slap shot past goaltender Trevor Kidd.
Kidd, who made 33 saves, started in place of Ed Belfour, who missed the game because of an infected right index finger.
Lightning 5, Hurricanes 1
TAMPA, Fla. - Ruslan Fedotenko had two goals and Nikolai Khabibulin made 21 saves, leading Tampa Bay past Eastern Conference champion Carolina.
Martin St. Louis and Dave Andreychuk had power-play goals during a three-goal first period for the Lightning (2-0), who are two-games over .500 for the first time since Oct. 29, 1996. Tampa Bay has opened the season with two consecutive wins for the first time in team history.
Carolina, which has lost two of its first three games, pulled goalie Arturs Irbe after he allowed three goals on eight shots in the first period.
Khabibulin lost his shutout bid with 25.3 seconds to play when Rod Brind'Amour scored on a power play.
Devils 3, Blue Jackets 2
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Patrik Elias scored the winning goal with 7:40 remaining to give New Jersey a victory over Columbus in the Devils' home opener.
Sergei Brylin and Mike Danton also scored for New Jersey, which opened the season with consecutive wins for the first time since 1995.
Sean Pronger and Jean-Luc Grand-Pierre had the Columbus goals.
Scott Gomez, who had two assists, set up the Elias score with a slick pass across the slot. Elias ripped a one-timer past Marc Denis for the deciding score.
Oilers 3, Predators 2
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Mike Comrie scored midway through the third period, carrying Edmonton to victory in Nashville's home opener.
The Predators, who failed to win their first home game for a fifth straight season, took the first seven shots of the third period without breaking a 2-2 tie.
Comrie made Edmonton's first shot of the period count. He put a wrist shot through goaltender Mike Dunham's legs from the left circle with 9:08 left. Ethan Moreau had his second assist of the game on the winning goal with help from Ales Hemsky.
Goalie Tommy Salo had 29 saves and preserved the victory for the Oilers.
Wild 2, Blues 2, OT
ST. LOUIS - Andrew Brunette scored with 15. 4 seconds left in the third period to lead Minnesota to an overtime tie.
Brunette, stationed in front of the net, converted a pass from Marian Gaborik with Wild goaltender Dwayne Roloson on the bench for a sixth attacker. It was Brunette's second goal of the season.
Roloson made 25 saves and St. Louis goalie Fred Brathwaite had 20, including two stops in the final minute of overtime.
St. Louis wing Dallas Drake scored off his own rebound at 9:32 of the third period to give the Blues a 2-1 lead.
Stars 5, Coyotes 2
PHOENIX - Pierre Turgeon scored the go-ahead goal with 7:54 left, leading unbeaten Dallas over Phoenix in the Coyotes' home opener. Bill Guerin and Rob DiMaio added goals in the last 1:15 to turn the game into a rout.
Turgeon also had an assist. He made it 3-2 in the third with a shot between the legs of goalie Sean Burke.
Darryl Sydor and Ulf Dahlen also scored for the Stars, who won for the second time in about 24 hours after beating Anaheim 4-2 on Friday. Radoslav Suchy scored a power-play goal for Phoenix and assisted on one by Claude Lemieux.
Canucks 5, Sharks 3
VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Trent Klatt scored his second goal of the game with 4:37 left as Vancouver won its home opener.
San Jose rallied from a two-goal third period deficit and tied it on Marco Sturm's second goal of the period at 14:37, but Klatt restored Vancouver's lead 46 seconds later. Matt Cooke added an empty-net goal.
Brent Sopel and Todd Warriner also scored for the Canucks, who beat the Sharks for the first time in almost two years to start the season 2-0.
Sturm had two goals and an assist and Teemu Sellane added a goal and an assist for the Sharks (0-2).
