Oakley off to be a Wizard
Bibby hurting
The Associated Press
WASHINGTON - Veteran forward Charles Oakley signed a one-year contract with the Washington Wizards on Saturday, reuniting him with former teammates Michael Jordan and Patrick Ewing.
Oakley, entering his 18th NBA season, "gives us a tough veteran presence in the front court," Wizards general manager Wes Unseld said. "He also brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that will help our young big men."
The 38-year-old Oakley has averaged 10 points and 9.8 rebounds over his career.
Terms of the contract weren't disclosed, but the team couldn't offer more than the $1 million veteran's minimum under the salary cap. Oakley's agent, Charles Grantham, has said several teams were interest in his client but none was offering more than that salary.
Oakley and Jordan played together in Chicago from 1985-88. Oakley returned to the Bulls last season with mixed results as he openly criticized the team's rebuilding efforts.
Oakley also played 10 seasons in New York with Ewing, who recently retired to become an assistant coach with the Wizards.
KINGS: Sacramento guard Mike Bibby underwent surgery on his fractured right foot and will miss six to eight weeks.
"I think I will be back in less than six weeks," Bibby said, his foot in a cast. "I have strong bones. I'm a quick healer."
Bibby, injured during practice Friday, signed a seven-year, $80million contract during the offseason. In five NBA seasons, he has missed just two of 296 regular-season games - both last year.
"If it was going to happen, it might as well be now," said Bibby.
SUNS: Star guard Stephon Marbury will play with a sore ankle this season unless the pain becomes too much to bear.
Marbury underwent surgical procedures on both ankles during the summer, but pain caused by bone spurs in his left ankle has persisted. He met with a foot specialist in New York on Thursday and decided not to have corrective surgery that would have sidelined him for the start of the regular season.
