STRONG IN DEFEAT

Florida State's Greg Jones rushed for 189 yards and a TD, but Xavier Beitia's 43-yard field goal went wide left, as the ninth-ranked Seminoles lost to No. 1 Miami 28-27.

SNAPPED

Iowa's pass defense held Michigan State WR Charles Rogers to five catches for 78 yards and ended his NCAA record streak of 14 straight games with a TD catch. The defense also collected four sacks, forced two fumbles and picked off three passes as No. 17 Iowa beat Michigan State 44-16. ... Canisius ended its home losing streak with a 30-27 win over La Salle, its first home win since 1998.

FROSH PHENOMS

Freshman Maurice Clarett rushed for 132 yards and scored three TDs (two rushing, one receiving) to lead No. 5 Ohio St. in a 50-7 romp over San Jose State. ... Freshman T.A. McLendon, playing with a cast on his broken right wrist, ran for a season-high 164 yards and two TDs as 14th-ranked North Carolina State remained unbeaten with a 34-17 win victory over North Carolina. McLendon has 12 rushing touchdowns this season, matching the N.C. State freshman record set in 1975 by Ted Brown.

CONVERSION PROBLEMS

Despite rolling to a 44-9 win over Oklahoma State, No. 19 Kansas State failed to convert after five of its seven TDs. Joe Rheem had two of his four extra-point attempts blocked, with Oklahoma State's Darrent Williams returning one of the blocks for a two-point defensive conversion. Jared Brite had his only PAT blocked, and Kansas State also came up short on both of its 2-point tries. ... UCLA's Chris Griffith had a PAT blocked in the third quarter, which came back to haunt the Bruins as they lost to No. 7 Oregon 31-30.

OUTGAINED NOT OUTSCORED

Pittsburgh gained 402 yards, compared with a season-low 185 yards for Notre Dame, but the eighth-ranked Fighting Irish still won 14-6. Notre Dame had only 40 yards rushing on 32 carries and 10 first downs.

ROARING BULLDOGS

Sixth-ranked Georgia extended its best start since 1982, with an 18-13 win over No. 10 Tennessee. Georgia remained the only unbeaten team in the SEC and stayed on course for its first conference title in 20 years.

LION TAMERS

Thirteenth-ranked Michigan beat No. 15 Penn State for the sixth straight time, 27-24 in OT. Before Michigan's current winning streak, the Nittany Lions had not lost six straight in a series since Pittsburgh beat them 10 times in a row from 1922-31.

STUCK IN THE SWAMP

LSU intercepted Florida QB Rex Grossman four times en route to a 36-7 win. It was No. 18 LSU's first win in The Swamp since 1986. The Gators, ranked No. 16, have lost twice this season at home, including 25-point loss to No. 1 Miami.

RED MEANS STOP

Eleventh-ranked Iowa State held Texas Tech quarterback Kliff Kingsbury to just 272 yards passing in the Cyclones' 31-17 win. The Red Raiders' QB had thrown for more than 400 yards in each of his two previous games.

MANNING MARK

Eli Manning tied the Mississippi school record for career TD passes with 43, sharing the mark with Romaro Miller. No. 25 Mississippi trounced Arkansas State 52-17. Manning's father, Archie, threw for 31 TDs in his stellar career at Ole Miss.

LIGHTING THE SCOREBOARD

Byron Leftwich threw for 447 yards and four TDs in the first half and Marshall scored twice on defense in a 66-21 victory over Buffalo. Leftwich, the Division I-A leader in total offense, completed 28 of 35 passes as the Herd built a 52-0 halftime lead. He did not play in the second half. ... Albany, N.Y., and Drake combined to score 91 points in a double-overtime shootout. Drake's Ira Vandever passed for a TD and a 2-point conversion to tie the game in regulation and ran 20 yards for the winning score in the second overtime, giving the Bulldogs a 49-42 win.

UNBELIEVABLE FINISH

Furman drove 73 yards in 10 plays and scored a TD with seven seconds left to take a 15-14 lead over Appalachian State. Instead of kicking the PAT, Furman chose to go for a 2-point conversion. Appalachian State's Josh Jeffries intercepted the pass, returned it 20 yards before pitching to Derrick Black, who ran 76 yards for a defensive conversion, giving the Mountaineers an amazing 16-15 win.

DAYTON 200

Coach Mike Kelly earned his 200th career victory in his 242nd game as Dayton beat Valparaiso 52-3. Kelly is in 22nd year coaching at Dayton. He became the second-fastest NCAA coach to reach the 200-win mark after Florida A&M's Jake Gaither, who reached 200 victories in 240 games. Penn State's Joe Paterno was the previous No. 2, reaching the 200-victory mark in 246 games.

OFFENSIVE SHORTAGE

Monmouth beat Stony Brook 14-9 without completing a pass, in a game played in a driving rainstorm. Quarterback Bill Rankin was unsuccessful on all three of his pass attempts. Stony Brook didn't fare much better, gaining just 35 yards on 23 pass attempts. The teams combined for just 268 yards in total offense, and were a combined 5-for-32 on third-down conversions.

Texas Christian fumbled the ball seven times, losing two, but still managed to beat Army 46-27.

SLUMPING KNIGHTS

Following a 46-27 loss to Texas Christian, Army is 0-6 for the second time in the last three seasons and only the third time in school history. Army's worst start came in 1973 when it went 0-10.

FLYING BOBCAT

Chad Brinker rushed for 127 yards and tied a school record with four TDs to lead Ohio past Eastern Michigan 55-27.

OWL POWER

Temple snapped a 16-game losing streak to Syracuse when the Orangemen missed an extra point with 30 seconds left, giving the Owls a 17-16 victory. Temple last beat Syracuse in 1983.

MULTI-SPORT STAR

Former basketball standout Cliff Washburn had four of The Citadel's seven sacks in a 26-7 victory over East Tennessee State. Washburn, a 6-foot-7, 270-pound end, played four seasons for the Bulldogs' basketball team and is the school's career leader with 102 games started. This is his first season of football at The Citadel.

WIN ONE FOR THE ZIPPER

Bob Hendry rushed for 240 yards and two TDs as Akron won for the first time this season, beating Liberty 49-21. The Zips had 440 yards rushing on 58 carries.

After Illinois went up 24-0 in the first half, Purdue scored 31 straight points in the second half. Illinois didn't score again until Antoineo Harris scored with 7 seconds left to play, tying the score at 31. In OT, Dustin Ward threw a 7-yard TD pass to Greg Lewis to give the Illini a 38-31 win.

STREAKING

Minnesota-Morris tied an NCAA Division II record with its 39th straight loss in a 52-14 defeat to Winona State. The record is shared by two other teams: St. Paul's (1948-53) and Cheyney (1994-98). ... St. Francis, Pa., lost to Central Connecticut St. 28-10 extending its losing streak to 28 games. The team's last victory was on Oct. 30, 1999, 21-8 over St. Peter's. ... Rice handed Navy its 13th straight home defeat, 17-10. ... Rutgers was shut out 40-0 by West Virginia, as the Scarlet Knights lost their 17th straight conference game.

SPEAKING

"I simply can't believe we lost the game like that again. I thought we had it. I went out to shake (Beitia's) hand. I thought he hit it. I've had that picture so many times before in my career. I can't stand it. Our kids did not deserve to lose this game." - Florida State coach Bobby Bowden, after Florida State kicker Xavier Beitia missed a field goal wide left as time expired, giving No. 1 Miami a 28-27 win. It was the fourth time since 1991 that the Seminoles failed to connect on what would have been a game-winning or tying field goal against the Hurricanes.

---

"Kind of in spite of me, our guys excelled." - Oklahoma quarterback Nate Hybl, after throwing four interceptions in the second-ranked Sooners' 35-24 win over No. 3 Texas.
