Top 25 football previews
Capsule summaries of Saturday's best games in college football around the nation.
No.9 Tennessee (4-1) at No.6 Georgia (5-0)Time/TV: 3:30 p.m./Ch. 12, 7.
Line: Georgia by 31/2.
What to watch: Tennessee got solid numbers from QB Casey Clausen and RB Jabari Davis in the six-OT game vs. Arkansas, second-longest in Division I-A, but the offense continues to be mistake-prone. LB Boss Bailey and the Georgia front might concentrate on Davis if Clausen (hairline fracture of left collarbone or "sore shoulder," depending on whom you believe) can't go. The Bulldogs' power running game, led by TB Musa Smith, will require the most attention from DT Demetrin Veal and UT's patchwork defense. Georgia QB David Greene's numbers could be better, but his receivers have to help.
No.7 Oregon (5-0) at No.25 UCLA (4-1)
Time: 3:30 p.m.
Line: UCLA by 21/2.
What to watch: UCLA's run defense took a beating in the loss to Colorado. LB Marcus Reese and his Bruins teammates must answer the challenge of Ducks TB Onterrio Smith, seeking his sixth consecutive 100-yard rushing game. UCLA will try to force Oregon QB Jason Fife into mistakes. Diminutive UCLA TB Tyler Ebell will get his first start against the Pac-10's stingiest run defense, anchored by LBs David Moretti and Kevin Mitchell. TE Mike Seidman could keep the Ducks' linebackers occupied if QB Cory Paus continues to look for him.
Pittsburgh (5-1) at No.8 Notre Dame (5-0)Time/TV: 2:30 p.m./Ch. 5, 22.
Line: Notre Dame by 61/2.
What to watch: After silencing Syracuse's Carrier Dome, Pittsburgh enters another tough venue. The Fighting Irish, in the top five in scoring defense and total defense, might not be so accommodating. CBs Shane Walton and Vontez Duff have been solid in coverage, allowing the other defenders to key on ball carriers. Panthers QB Rod Rutherford must find WRs Larry Fitzgerald and Roosevelt Bynes quickly. Pittsburgh's defense, anchored by LB Gerald Hayes, will clamp down on Notre Dame RBs Ryan Grant and Rashon Powers-Neal. Notre Dame might need to open up the offense, a challenge for QB Pat Dillingham if Carlyle Holiday (shoulder) still can't go.
No.17 Penn State (4-1) at No.10 Michigan (4-1)Time/TV: 3:30 p.m./Ch.9, 2.
Line: Michigan by 41/2.
What to watch: This could be another year of big scores or bad defense, take your pick, in the Big Ten. Consistent ground yardage from Michigan TB Chris Perry and FB B.J. Askew is needed. QB John Navarre should have open targets if his line can keep PSU DT Jimmy Kennedy off him. With improved ball-distribution skills, Nittany Lions QB Zack Mills is unlikely to allow a reprise of last year's shutout loss. Wolverines LB Victor Hobson must pay attention to PSU RB Larry Johnson, a threat rushing and receiving.
No. 11 N.C. State (6-0)at North Carolina (2-3)
Time: Noon.
Line: N.C. State by 61/2.
What to watch: With a timely bye week, Wolfpack TB T.A. McLendon (wrist surgery) isn't expected to miss playing time.
No.13 Wash. State (5-1) at Stanford (1-3)Time: 5 p.m.
Line: WSU by 8.
What to watch: QB Jason Gesser and Co. hope for an easier time at Stanford. The Cardinal want a track meet.
Texas Tech (4-2) at No.14 Iowa State (5-1)Time/TV: 7 p.m./TBS.
Line: Iowa State by 6.
What to watch: Hot QBs headline this tasty matchup. The Red Raiders' Kliff Kingsbury is all about aerobatics, making ample use of WR Wes Welker and RB Taurean Henderson. Seneca Wallace has proven downfield weapons in WRs Lane Danielson and Jack Whitver but is just as effective with his feet. The Cyclones' defense, the team's most improved area, could make the difference; LB Brandon Brown will try to keep Kingsbury's passes short. Tech surrenders more yardage than any other team in the Big 12 except Kansas. LB Lawrence Flugence needs support to contain Wallace. If Red Raiders can force punts, Welker presents a return threat.
No.15 LSU (4-1) at No.16 Florida (4-2)Time/TV: 7:45 p.m./ESPN.
Line: Florida by 8 1/2.
What to watch: LSU enters the Swamp with the nation's top-ranked defense but without star TB LaBrandon Toefield (broken arm). The Tigers' offense must try to match the Gators' defensive speed with RB Domanick Davis and WR Michael Clayton. Florida DE Bobby McCray will try to disrupt LSU QB Matt Mauck. LB Bradie James and S Norman LeJeune anchor a Tigers defense that will try to shut down QB Rex Grossman, coming off a disastrous outing at Mississippi. He had a 464-yard, five-TD game at LSU in 2001.
Arizona (3-2) at No.18 Washington (3-2)Time: 3:30 p.m.
Line: Washington by 131/2.
What to watch: Both teams seek their first Pac-10 victory.
Brigham Young (3-2) at No.19 Air Force (5-0)Time/TV: 10 p.m./ESPN2.
Line: Air Force by 4.
What to watch: A key Mountain West showdown concludes your night's entertainment. Though BYU's aerial attack is well-suited to dramatic comebacks, as the Cougars demonstrated last week against Utah State, the Falcons showed resilience with a second-half rally at Utah. BYU DL Brady Poppinga won't be in pass-rush mode, but his speed will be needed to disrupt Air Force option directed by QB Chance Harridge with HB Leotis Palmer as his top pitch man. The Falcons hope the newly implemented nickel-base defense will help slow BYU QB Bret Engemann.
Extra point: Though BYU owns an 18-4 edge in rivalry, Falcons have won last three meetings outside Provo, Utah, including 1998 WAC title game in Las Vegas.
Michigan State (3-2) at No.20 Iowa (5-1)Time/TV: Noon/ESPN.
Line: Iowa by 51/2.
What to watch: This week, Iowa's shaky pass defense tries to stop Spartans QB Jeff Smoker and record-setting WR Charles Rogers. Michigan State needs a fast start from RB Dawan Moss. Hawkeyes TB Fred Russell has big-play capability but needs more consistent blocking. QB Brad Banks can win games on his own if necessary. MSU should have LB Seth Mitchell (knee) back at full speed, and he might be asked to key on Iowa TE Dallas Clark.
Arkansas (2-2) at No.21 Auburn (4-1)Time/TV: 12:30 p.m./Ch. 25.
Line: Auburn by 51/2.
What to watch: The tired Razorbacks will do their best to contain Auburn RB Carnell Williams.
No.22 Wisconsin (5-1) at Indiana (2-3)Time/TV: Noon/Ch. 12.
Line: Wisconsin by 12.
What to watch: The Badgers look to bounce back from the Penn State heartbreaker.
Oklahoma State (2-3) at No.23 Kansas State (4-1)Time: 2 p.m.
Line: K-State by 141/2.
What to watch: The Cowboys hope to make more noise in the Big 12 race after nearly toppling Texas. Wildcats try to stop conference losing streak at one.
California (4-2) at No.24 USC (3-2)Time/TV: 6:30 p.m./FSN.
Line: USC by 12.
What to watch: USC coach Pete Carroll undoubtedly will have less trouble convincing DT Mike Patterson and linemates to get after Cal QB Kyle Boller after his winning performance at Washington. Boller, a pocket passer, must make reads quickly to find favorite recipients, WRs Jonathan Makonnen and Geoff McArthur. Standout Trojans S Troy Polamalu (ankle) is questionable. USC's ground attack still is trying to find its feet, but QB Carson Palmer is likely to find passing lanes.
