New organ donor list benefits 3
By The Cincinnati Enquirer
Three people have benefited from the first Tristate resident who became an organ donor through the new Ohio Organ Donor Registry, the LifeCenter reported Wednesday.
Melissa Jordan Land, 34, of Hamilton, a mother of two, was shot and killed Sept. 20 while she was a passenger in a car during an apparent robbery. Her liver and both kidneys were successfully transplanted.
The state registry took effect July 1, creating a computer list of people who have consented to be organ donors. The law that created the registry also says the individual's consent overrides any objections that occur later from surviving family members.
Ms. Land had signed up with the registry in August when she renewed her driver's license. Her mother, Shirley Hecker, said she would have consented anyway.
It was a shame they couldn't have used her heart, too. She had such a great heart, Mrs. Hecker said. She gave as much as she could in life. And she also gave as much as she could in death.
