Men get 10 years in bar death
By The Associated Press
CANTON - Two men seen congratulating each other after stomping a man who had been fatally beaten outside a tavern were sentenced to 10 years each in prison.
Stark County Common Pleas Court Judge Sara Lioi rejected appeals for clemency and gave Terence Jacocks, 26, and Jason Maske, 28, the maximum sentences possible on Tuesday.
The two were acquitted of murder last week but were convicted of involuntary manslaughter for their role in the April 4 brawl.
Witnesses said the men stomped on the unconscious victim, Woodrow Washington III, 33, of Dover, then gave each other high-fives.
The involuntary manslaughter convictions mean jurors believed Mr. Jacocks and Mr. Maske caused serious physical harm to Mr. Washington after he provoked them.
Mr. Washington, who died later of his injuries, was portrayed by the defense as a bully who jumped into an argument and started throwing punches. He was released in 1996 after serving a five-year prison sentence for aggravated assault.
The attack began over an argument after another man wouldn't move his car when a suburban Jackson Township tavern closed.
