Sharonville officer still in hospital after crash
By The Cincinnati Enquirer
WEST CHESTER TWP. An auxiliary Sharonville police officer remained in fair condition Tuesday at Bethesda North Hospital after he struck a car Monday that pulled in front of him as he rode in a funeral procession.
Stephen J. Griffith, 48, suffered severe cuts to his legs and arms but is expected to recover, said West Chester Police Officer Charles Murphy.
The collision occurred as Mr. Griffith rode his motorcycle southbound in the median on Cincinnati-Dayton Road alongside a funeral procession, according to police. He was not on duty at the time, but was assisting the procession as part of a private firm he owns, police said.
Ingrid Schmidt, 64, of West Chester, pulled her red 1997 Toyota Corolla into his path, Officer Murphy said. Mr. Griffith struck the passenger side of her car, ran off the right side of the road, tipped over and slid about 15 feet, according to the police crash report.
Mr. Griffith's speed hasn't been determined yet but witness statements put it at about 30 miles per hour, records show.
The crash still is under investigation. No charges have been filed.
