Always Cam takes Jugette in straight heats

The Associated Press

DELAWARE, Ohio — Always Cam, driven by Eric Ledford, won the Jugette for 3-year-old pacing fillies in straight heats Wednesday at the Delaware County Fairgrounds, taking the third and final heat by 3 1/4 lengths over Maureen Hanover.

Always Cam took the lead at the start, controlled the pace and outsprinted the field, posting a time of 1:53 3-5 for the mile. Lady Graceful was third.

The daughter of Western Hanover has posted nine victories in 15 starts this year for her owners, Cam Land LLC, and trainer Bill Zendt.

The winner of the second heat, OK Corral Hanover, broke stride early and could not catch up with the leaders.

“When OK Corral Hanover broke stride, that changed the complexion of the race. She was comfortable and easy to drive,” said Ledford, who won his second Jugette title.

Always Cam held off a late rally by Maureen Hanover in the first heat. The first three finishers of that race finished in the same order in the final heat.

The winning time of 1:52 4/5 in the opening heat was one-fifth of a second off the stakes record set by Towner's Image in 1993 and tied by Eternal Camnation in 2000.

OK Corral Hanover led from start to finish in the second heat, posting a two-length victory over Always An Art in 1:53 3-5. Cam Swifty was third.
