Charges against priest still up in air

New information has surfaced, officials say

By Dan Horn, dhorn@enquirer.com

Prosecutors in Montgomery County say they need more time to decide whether a suspended priest should be charged with a crime for allegedly misusing church computers.

The Rev. Thomas Kuhn has been under investigation since someone complained earlier this year about files found on church computers at St. Henry's parish in Dayton, Ohio.

Father Kuhn, a former principal of Elder High School, resigned as pastor at St. Henry's two weeks ago, saying the investigation had “gone on too long.”

Prosecutors said Tuesday they were close to wrapping up the investigation when they received more information that will prolong their work.

Several members of the parish called authorities after learning Father Kuhn had resigned and that Archbishop Daniel Pilarczyk had written a letter declaring that he believed the priest was “guiltless of any misbehavior.”

“We have received some information from the community that is going to require further inquiry,” said Jim Knight, spokesman for Montgomery County Prosecutor Matt Heck. “Whether that will lead to evidence or not, we don't know yet.”

The Montgomery County sheriff's department recently completed an investigation and submitted its findings to prosecutors. Mr. Knight would not discuss the findings of the investigation or whether it was likely that criminal charges would result.

Prosecutors also have been reviewing old sexual abuse allegations involving other priests. For several months, prosecutors have requested and received church records related to allegations that date back several years.

Father Kuhn is one of four archdiocesan priests who have been suspended or voluntarily placed on leave since early this year. The other three all have been accused of sexual misconduct.
