       Sept. 19 — Preseason schedule begins.
       Oct. 1 — Trade deadline, 2 p.m., EDT. Trade freeze in effect through completion of the waiver draft.
       Oct. 4 — NHL waiver draft.
       Oct. 8 — Deadline for unsigned juniors claimed in the first three rounds of the entry draft to be returned to junior clubs.
       Oct. 9 — Regular season begins.
       Nov. 4 — Hockey Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
       Dec. 19-27 — Holiday roster freeze in effect.

        2003
       Jan. 30 — NHL-CHL top prospects game.
       Feb. 1-2 — All-Star weekend at Sunrise, Fla.
       March 11 — Trading deadline, 3 p.m., EST.
       April 6 — Regular season ends.
       April 9 — Stanley Cup playoffs begin.
       April 26-May 11 — IIHF World Championships at Finland.
       May 26 — Latest possible start date for Stanley Cup finals.
       June 9 — Latest possible end date for Stanley Cup finals.
       June 21-22 — NHL draft.
       July 1 — Eligible players transferred to free agent list.
       July 15 — Deadline for eligible Group II players to elect salary arbitration. Deadline for eligible players to elect Group V free agency.
       Aug. 1-15 — Salary arbitration hearings held.
