MOUNT HEALTHY Six Mount Healthy students have been arrested after a large group of teenagers threw rocks and other objects at a Deer Park school bus while it was leaving a Friday night football game.
Five Deer Park High School students were treated for minor injuries after their bus, carrying the school's football players and cheerleaders, was pelted with rocks and other objects, including a Big Wheel children's bike.
Deer Park had earlier defeated Mount Healthy, 6-3.
This week, Mount Healthy police arrested six students who attend Mount Healthy middle and high schools. They are being charged with rioting, and more charges are pending further police investigation, Mount Healthy Police Chief Al Schaefer said.
Police also had a warrant for another student's arrest Wednesday afternoon.
Deer Park reserve football players J.J. Joerger and Stephen Bond were on the bus leaving the Mount Healthy stadium parking lot when coaches told them to roll up the windows because the varsity bus, driving ahead, had been hit by a couple of rocks.
The first one to hit the window didn't break it, just cracked it, said JJ, a 15-year-old sophomore. I didn't get down fast enough and a rock came through (the window) and hit me on the side of my head.
Stephen, 14, said everyone on the bus fell to the floor.
Everybody was really scared, the freshman said. The cheerleaders started to scream. And the kid in front of me started screaming, "There's glass in my eye!'
Mount Healthy Superintendent David Horine said new security measures including more police officers will be in place for Friday's football game against Shroder Paideia.
From our standpoint, we'd still like to have them come over to show them we can manage the facilities well and make them feel welcome, Mr. Horine said. This was a few students that we hope won't taint our entire school district because this is not what our district is about.
