Springfield Twp. outlines 'vision'

SPRINGFIELD TWP. Township officials and citizens have drafted the 2002 Springfield Township Vision Plan, which could be adopted as early as the next trustees meeting Sept. 10.
Residents helped to develop the plan, but we want to make sure the public knows about it and comments on it, said Deanne Kuennen, the township development services director.
The vision plan is an update of a 1996 plan and outlines strategies in five areas: neighborhood stabilization and enhancement, the environment, economic development and growth, the delivery of government services, and township identity.
Under these headings are current projects and more than 70 short- and long-term projects that address quality-of-life issues and government services such as the adoption of a township zoning code, creating bikeway and pedestrian avenues, establishing a database to inventory commercial and industrial properties, and creating a property maintenance code.
Township Administrator Mike Hinnenkamp said this wish list, of sorts, is a fairly generic statement to say what's important to people and what we think today the needs are going to be.
The township's population is 37,587, which is slightly decreased (1.06 percent) from the last census. There are, however, three subdivisions under construction: an upscale subdivision in the northern township called The Meadows at Wright's Farm, and two other single-family subdivisions in the western section of the township, Miles Woods and Adams Creek. A condominium complex, Central Park, off Galbraith Road, was just completed.
Some items covered are already funded and under way, such as $12 million in physical improvements to the township's police, fire and services departments, financed by municipal bonds sold in May.
The Sept. 10 meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the township administration building. Copies of the plan are available at the building, 9150 Winton Road, and are posted on the township Web site.
Comment is welcomed and can be directed to officials by calling 522-1410, fax 729-0818, or via the Web site.
