Barnhart brings in two Beavers
The Associated Press
LEXINGTON, Ky. New University of Kentucky athletics director Mitch Barnhart has added two familiar faces to his staff.
Greg Byrne, the athletics fund-raiser at Oregon State, and Rick Thompson, the general manager of Beaver Sports Properties in Corvallis, Ore., were hired Monday by Barnhart, the former Oregon State athletics director.
Byrne will become UK's new associate director of athletics for fund-raising and development. His responsibilities will include overseeing the UK Athletic Association's Blue-White Fund, which finances scholarships for nearly 300 student-athletes.
Thompson will serve as the associate athletics director for athletics for marketing, licensing and media relations.
The hirings come nearly three weeks after Barnhart eliminated the senior associate athletics director and the associate athletics director for marketing positions.
Barnhart, who took over as athletics director on Aug. 1, has added five positions. Byrne and Thompson are his first two hires.
